Homeless Dog Saved From Freezing Temps Melts Hearts With First Tail Wag.

As most of the country either recovers from or prepares for days of below-freezing temperatures and power outages, thousands of homeless animals can do nothing but search for shelter. Kansas City, Missouri, is no exception to the extreme winter weather, but on January 15, a selfless Animal Services Officer wasted no time responding to a call about a local dog in need of shelter. (see video below)

How One Generous Phone Call Can Save an Animal’s Life

A good samaritan spotted the pit bull outside of a home and quickly alerted local authorities. However, officers were unable to contact anyone in the home. After determining that the house was vacant and discovering a wound on the dog’s leg that needed treatment, they wasted no time bringing her somewhere safe.

And that’s where the veterinary team from KC Pet Project comes in! As soon as the officer dropped her off at the shelter, the group worked quickly to warm her up and inspect the wound on her leg. No one was able to determine whether she was abandoned by the former homeowners or lived as a stray, but one thing was certain–she was grateful to be rescued.

A Rescue Dog’s First Tail Wag is a Cause For Celebration

Even though the friendly rescue pup’s injuries and exposure to the elements left her shaking as she settled in the shelter, she also had a team of kind-hearted vet techs who covered her in cuddles and blankets to keep her warm and comforted. It took only ten minutes before she offered her very first tail wags to her rescuers, and they knew it was her way of saying ‘thank you.’

By the time the shelter posted an updated Facebook video with the unnamed dog, viewers were emotionally invested. They were relieved and overjoyed to see her decompressing in a shelter kennel after such a difficult time. It’s unclear if she’ll go to a foster home or when she’ll be available for adoption, but the most important thing is that this sweet dog is off the streets and getting the help she needs to thrive.

Keeping Dogs Safe From the Cold is Essential

Sadly, this Kansas City shelter dog is only one of hundreds of new intakes that KC Pet Project has seen this winter. Only the day before she was saved, the rescue shared on Facebook that the first two weeks of January saw an 87% increase in calls regarding neglect concerns and dogs without shelter in extreme cold. Everyone from Animal Services Officers to shelter volunteers has been working tirelessly to get as many pets out of the cold as possible, but the general public can also help by keeping dogs indoors throughout the winter. Just ask this newly rescued pit bull–dogs deserve to be comfortable no matter the weather!
