Dog Found Tied to Pole with Bag of Food. His Puppy Zeal Warms Hearts, but Still Awaits Forever Home

A black Labrador retriever, now affectionately known as Stewie, was deliberately abandoned outside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter nine months ago, tied to a pole with just a bag of food left behind. Security footage showed the unknown individual purposely avoiding the shelter’s cameras, likely trying to circumvent surrender fees.
Joyful & Puppy-Like
But Stewie’s unfortunate start has given way to a remarkable story of spirited perseverance. Despite an old injury that causes him to walk with a noticeable limp, the shelter staff has watched Stewie blossom into a joyful, puppy-like companion dog seeking his forever home.
“He might have a limp, but he’s in no pain. It’s remarkable how he manages to get around and play just like any other dog,” said Karen Flanagan, a shelter worker closely involved with Stewie’s care. His initial distrust of new people has faded as his fun-loving personality emerged.
Stewie quickly integrated into shelter life, befriending many of the other dogs during playtime in the yard. “He’s made quite a few buddies here,” Flanagan noted. The formerly nervous Lab took well to basic training and is now leash-trained and knows simple commands.

As he gained confidence, Stewie’s quirky behaviors and unmistakable zest for life surfaced. “He has these zoomies after he’s done his business – it’s absolutely hilarious,” Flanagan said with a laugh. He enjoys simple pleasures like ginger and pepperoni treats, cuddling in his cozy bed, and sprinting outside.
Looking For His Forever Home
“When he gives his paw, it’s always the injured one, as if he’s showing his trust in you,” Flanagan said. “He has this way of looking right into your eyes when you talk to him, like he understands everything.”
Now, the shelter staff hopes a loving family will take a chance on Stewie and give him the forever home he deserves after such a difficult start.
“What Stewie needs is someone who sees him for the loving, loyal companion he is beyond his limp and his past,” Flanagan said. “He’s shown us all how resilient rescued animals can be when given a second chance.”
Stewie’s journey from abandonment to the shelter highlights the continual need for responsible pet ownership and adoption. As the staff has witnessed firsthand, animals who have faced neglect and hardship still have so much love to offer in the right home.
