Sweet One-Eyed Dog Is Full of Love & Waiting for Forever Family to Adopt Her
In June 2023, Kiki was found wandering the streets in Downey, California, and was taken to the local shelter as a stray with a severe eye injury. She received treatment for the injury, but unfortunately, lost her left eye. Now fully recovered, she’s staying with a foster family as she waits for her forever home.
Kiki’s Rescue From the Streets
Kiki arrived at the Downey Animal Shelter with a severe eye injury. She was not microchipped and sadly nobody came looking for her after she arrived at the shelter.
Staff didn’t know how she received the eye injury, but they presumed she was a stray who was attacked by another animal. Hoping proper treatment could save her eye, they took Kiki into surgery. The damage was too extensive, and the difficult decision was made to remove the eye entirely.
With her injury requiring specialized care, the race was on to find Kiki a rescue willing to take her in. If a foster or forever home couldn’t be secured promptly, this sweet girl faced the heartbreaking possibility of euthanasia.
Luck Was on Kiki’s Side
During a visit to the shelter housing Kiki, a rescuer was instantly smitten by the three-year-old Terrier/Carolina Dog/Mystery mix’s huge smile and excitement over having a visitor. Despite her ordeal, Kiki’s joyful spirit shone through. The rescuer knew she needed to act fast and contacted Julia Holt, Vice President of I.C.A.R.E. Dog Rescue.
After seeing pictures and videos of the recovering pup, Holt was convinced they had to save her. “Her sweet demeanor, gentle soul, and beautiful face captured our hearts at the shelter,” Holt recalls of that fateful day, July 21, 2023, when they rescued Kiki. “While all dogs are special, we knew she was extra special and that no one else was coming to save her, so we had to act fast.” Luckily, I.C.A.R.E quickly secured a nurturing foster family to welcome Kiki with open arms as she continued her journey to recovery.
Kiki’s Waiting for Her Forever Family
Kiki may only have one eye, but that hasn’t stopped her from embracing life with boundless energy and joy. She’s still with her foster family and a pack of dogs of all sizes and ages and has confidently settled into life with a loving family.
This spunky pup loves attention and being around people. She’s always ready for adventure, whether it’s acting as co-pilot on car rides, short neighborhood strolls, or epic hiking excursions in the great outdoors. “She prances around whenever she thinks it’s time to eat or go for a walk. And it’s so cute – she dances with her head going from side to side,” Holt describes affectionately.
Other than going on walks, the only thing Kiki loves more is chasing birds, and her powerful sniffer is always on high alert for new scents wafting through the neighborhood. “She’s a bit of an escape artist,” Holt says with a laugh. “If she smells something interesting in the wind, she’ll try to follow the scent trail. So her foster has to keep a close watch when she’s outside.”
Spayed, microchipped, and fully house-trained, this loving girl is ready to bounce into her forever home. For more information about Kiki and how to adopt her, visit I.C.A.R.E. Dog Rescue.
