Mama Coco Abandoned in Vacant Home With Her Pup; Now Stuck in Shelter for 5 Months Waiting for Love
Mama Coco was cruelly abandoned by her owners, locked inside a rental home along with two other dogs and her puppy, and left to fend for themselves. While the other three dogs were eventually adopted into loving homes, Mama Coco remains alone, still patiently waiting for a family to welcome her with open arms.
The Rescue of Mama Coco and The Other Abandoned Dogs
In October 2023, a heartbreaking case of abandonment unfolded in Cleveland, Oklahoma involving Mama Coco and her puppy. Their neglectful owners had locked them, along with two other dogs, inside a rented house with no food or water before disappearing.
It was approximately one week later that neighbors realized nobody was caring for the dogs in the house and that they were trapped inside. A neighbor notified the homeowner, and together they went inside to care for the dogs. After two weeks the caregivers knew the owners were not coming back, and they surrendered the dogs to the animal shelter.
Upon intake, the scared canines were examined and, despite their ordeal, deemed healthy enough for adoption. The two other dogs and Mama Coco’s puppy were quickly adopted, however, Mama Coco herself was not so fortunate – she was left behind at the shelter, her family once again torn apart through no fault of her own.
Mama Coco Awaits for a Family To Love Her
Pound Pals, a local rescue organization that partners with the shelter, was alerted to Mama Coco’s plight and her need for a forever home. Kiera Brewer, who works closely with the rescued animals, has spent significant time with Mama Coco since her arrival. “She was super sweet from the very beginning and absolutely loves food, as you can tell,” Brewer said of the mature pit bull. “She’s a little chunky girl, but boy does she have a lot of love to give!”
The rescue’s first priority was getting Mama Coco spayed, which is required before adoption, and she was tested for heartworms before the surgery. The test came back positive, but thanks to community donations, Mama Coco received the treatment she needed and is now heartworm-free. She has also been spayed, is up-to-date on vaccinations, and is in good overall health.
Although she’s been ready for her forever home for five months now, Brewer shared that there has been no interest in adopting Mama Coco. “I’m afraid it’s because she is a Pit Bull. We have such a hard time rehoming Pits, and she hasn’t even had a chance to prove herself,” Brewer lamented. “She hasn’t been moved to a foster home because no one seems willing to step up and give her a chance.”
Pound Pals Is on a Mission To Find Mama a Forever Home
Sadly, Mama Coco spends the majority of her days confined to her enclosure at the shelter. She loves going on car ride adventures, and on pleasant weather days, Mama looks forward to spending a few cherished hours outdoors in the yard, basking in the sun’s warmth and enjoying well-deserved nap times.
Despite her challenging circumstances, Mama Coco has learned what is needed to become the perfect pet. She’s wonderful with children and gets along splendidly with other dogs, though she hasn’t been a fan of feline friends. She minds well on the leash, is fully house-trained, and keeps her kennel area tidy. “Coco has been a sweetheart since the day she arrived, and she is my favorite dog in our care right now,” Brewer affectionately shares. “She is such a good girl and deserves an amazing forever family. Please help us find this sweet girl her perfect home.”
