Pet Boarders Nearly Starve Recently Rescued Dog, Legal Battle Looms

Luna, a sweet 1.5-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, was lucky to be rescued from a high-kill shelter in Los Angeles, but that was just the start of her journey. After being saved from euthanasia, she ended up in a terrible boarding situation where she was neglected and starved, nearly to the point of being skin and bones.

A Second Chance at Life

Now, thanks to the dedicated volunteers at “Girls Who Love Dogs” Rescue, Luna has overcome that nightmare and is ready to shower a new family with loyal companionship.

“Luna was a stray who landed at the very overcrowded and unfortunately overlooked Downey Animal Shelter,” explains Alicia Galvan, director of Girls Who Love Dogs Rescue. “Her 72-hour stray hold had expired, and no one had claimed her. We rescued her just moments before she was going to be euthanized.”

The non-profit’s mission is giving abandoned or neglected dogs from high-kill shelters a second chance at life. True to their name, the all-female volunteer team has big hearts for pups in peril.

“Our goal is to provide these dogs with more than just survival,” Galvan says. “We want them to truly get to live – safe, loved and in a forever home.”

Boarding House of Horrors

After her shelter rescue, Luna’s journey took a nightmarish turn when she ended up in an inadequate boarding situation. “We accepted an offer from someone who ran a boarding business to foster Luna and two other dogs,” Galvan recalls. “At first, everything seemed fine as we posted them for adoption.”

But when the rescue went to retrieve another boarding dog recently adopted, they encountered a horrific scene.

“Luna and the two other dogs were skin and bones – it was clear they weren’t receiving proper care or food despite us supplying resources,” says Galvan. “We immediately removed all our dogs from that environment.”

The rescuers plan to pursue legal action over the dogs’ neglect. But miraculously, sweet Luna didn’t let her latest setback dim her sunny spirit.

A Goofy Gal With Lots of Love to Give

Despite a rough start, Luna’s affectionate personality shines through. “She can be a little shy initially,” Galvan notes, “but once she warms up, she’s the sweetest, most loving dog.”

This playful pup adores doggy games of chase (“It’s like she’s playing tag!” laughs Galvan), is great with other pets and kids, and even delights in belly rubs. Luna is spayed, vaccinated and ready to shower her new family with loyal companionship.

“She’s been so resilient,” says Galvan. “Luna’s been through a lot, but she’s still eager to please, affectionate, and goofy. She’s put her past behind her and only has the best ahead.”

Now, this once-overlooked pup just needs someone to see her amazing spirit. Could you give Luna the loving future she deserves?
