568 Days and Counting: The Heartbreaking Tale of Millie, The Mama Dog Left Behind

Meet Millie. She is a 3-year-old american pitbull/staffy mix who has been waiting for her forever home for 567 days at a shelter. That’s longer than any other dog in the shelter’s history.

Mama Dog Left Behind

Millie came to Pet Helpers Adoption Center, in Charleston, South Carolina, from a high kill shelter where she was facing euthanasia due to overcrowding. She was also very pregnant, and gave birth to six adorable puppies shortly after arriving at the shelter. She was a wonderful mother to her pups, who all found loving homes. But Millie was left behind, despite being a sweet and friendly dog who loves people.

Why is Millie still waiting for her home?

Well, she faces some challenges that make her adoption more difficult than others. First of all, she is a dark black/brown dog, which sadly makes her less appealing to some adopters. There is also a stigma attached to her breed, which is often misunderstood and discriminated against. Millie is also highly reactive with other dogs, which means she needs to be the only pet in the house.

Millie Was Adopted Then Returned, Due To Landlord Discrimination

Millie had a brief taste of what it’s like to have a home, when she was adopted by a married couple who had no other pets or kids. They fell in love with her personality and energy, and were ready to give her the life she deserved. However, their happiness was short-lived. Their landlord threatened to evict them if they brought Millie home. The landlord had a prejudice against Millie’s breed, and refused to let them keep her. They had no choice but to return Millie to the shelter, heartbroken and devastated.

But Millie didn’t give up hope. She still greets every visitor with a wagging tail and a big smile. She loves to go for walks with the shelter staff and volunteers, who adore her. She enjoys playing tug of war with her toys, and rolling in the grass with joy. She is very affectionate and cuddly, and will snuggle up next to you for belly rubs.

As soon as you approach her she wiggles her whole body in excitement and taps her feet in anticipation of the pets she is about to receive. She loves to go for walks, play tug of war with her toys and roll in the grass.

In fact, every walk you take her on you are sure to have her flop on her side and roll around with a big smile on her face with a snort or too to let you know she’s having the best time. But the thing that brings her the most joy, spending time cuddled up by your side getting lots of belly rubs.

She will curl up with her favorite toy, giving it lots of pittie nibbles while she waits for you to dispense all the pets you can muster.

Millie deserves a chance to find her forever home, where she can be loved and cherished for who she is. She needs someone who can understand her needs and provide her with structure and guidance. She also needs someone who can appreciate her fun-loving and goofy side, and share lots of laughter and happiness with her.
