Great Dane Dumped At Shelter After Kids Starved Him Finally Finds His Forever Home
The eyes and physical appearance of Scoobie — a five-and-a-half-year-old Great Dane — speak volumes about the painful, undeserving life he’s been through.
As celebrated pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka interacts with him within the confines of the shelter environment, Scoobie’s brown eyes seem filled with confusion and sadness, a testament to the emotional scars he’s dealing with after being let down by the humans who meant the world to him. His spine and ribs are visible through his fur, and despite him being an adult giant dog breed whose ideal weight should be no less than 100 pounds, Scoobie only weighs between 50 and 75 pounds, as per the shelter records.
This gentle giant was surrendered to the Animal Friends of the Valleys in Wildomar, CA, in an emaciated state. It’s alleged that his owner did so after the family kids consistently failed to feed him.
Different Narratives Surrounding Scoobie’s Surrender to the Shelter
Back in 2022, Scoobie once spent the night at an animal shelter night drop courtesy of his owners, who, at the time, explained they were facing situations that made it difficult for them to care for him. After much persuasion from the shelter staff, as documented on TikTok by @Rockykanakaoffcial, the family decided to give poor Scoobie another shot.
Sadly for Scoobie, the relief of being back to where he thought was his forever home would be short-lived. This time around, his family surrendered him to the shelter for good. Shelter records indicate that Scoobie’s family said they were moving to Mexico and couldn’t tag him along. They further claimed that Scoobie had stomach problems that largely contributed to his emaciation.
However, the shelter feels that this is simply a case of a family who struggled to meet the dietary demands of a Great Dane and thus opted to give him up once and for all.
Sweet Scoobie Now on a Strict Feeding Plan
You can tell that Scoobie never really had a taste of the finer things in life by just how grateful he was to be spoiled with treats — and neck scratches — from Kanaka.
His poor weight is alarming, which is why the top priority at the moment is to give him the nutrition he needs to reach a healthy weight. Because of his emaciated state, he’s been placed on a strict feeding plan to ensure slow but safe weight gain. The best part is, Sundays has offered to feed Scoobie for a whole year, so whoever adopts him won’t have to worry about his high dietary requirements.
Scoobie’s Happy Ending Comes Sooner Than We Expected……..
We’re thrilled to report that Scoobie has been adopted! More than ever, we choose to believe his surrender to the shelter had a silver lining; it closed a super painful chapter of his life and ushered in a new era of hope for better days.
Scoobie does not have a complicated list of what he expects from his new owner. All he truly desires is for his new human to dote on him for the rest of his life so that feeling unloved and starved become distant memories.
Scoobie has all valid reasons not to trust any human after the neglect he’s been through. Yet, he still exhibits a sweet, laid-back demeanor and a willingness to love hard once again.
