California Family Wants to Euthanize Their 2 Dogs. People are Fuming!

Animal shelter staff see their fair share of shocking cases, but there was no preparing the kind folks at Hearts for Paws Rescue in California for what they would learn when owner surrender Godric entered their lives. This young Labrador Retriever is just as outgoing and friendly as he appears to be, but when he was surrendered, his owners requested that he be euthanized.

Needless to say, the rescuers had a lot of questions. Interestingly enough, the plot only thickened when shelter staff began looking into this dog and his first family. They shared what they learned in a moving May 14 TikTok video, and now more people than ever are cheering for Godric and his Happily Ever After. However, that wasn’t the only support this sweet Retriever was going to find in the shelter!

Just when you think you’ve seen it all… (**Note: the shelter also believes they are not candidates for euthanasia & placed both dogs on the adoption floor where they are waiting now!) Owner surrendered with request for Euthanasia is more common than you’d think but when we passed Gordic’s card at the shelter & were perplexed anyone would want this amazing young dog to be euthanized. When we asked the shelter about it, turns out there was a SECOND dog from the same family, who had already been at the shelter a 1-2 months before her brother Godric. Sadie is a 6 yr plot hound who was surrendered by and they requested she also be euthanized 😡😡 Sadie had reportedly growled at their baby; then month later Godric reportedly bit the baby who had crawled into his food bowl. But instead of Responsibly rehoming or even just simply surrendering to the shelter, they asked the shelter to kill them. We will never understand! (Ps This just goes to show ANY dog has the potential to bite under unfair circumstances & supervision with children is paramount) Luckily the shelter could also easily see how wonderful these dogs decided against euthanasia! Sadie has already been there 2 MONTHS with no interest and Godric has been there 2 weeks — they could go separately but could also go together!! Godric might be swooped up faster… but what about poor Sadie? We can’t forget her!! During our time with these dogs they were exceptionally sweet! They SO deserve a second chance! 👉🏽 They should go to homes without kiddos to set them up for best chances of success. 📍 Both are currently located at @solanoanimalcare & adoptable through the shelter OR foster / foster to adopt with us (must be within 1.5 hrs of Davis / sac – foster form linked in bio).

A Surprise Sibling Reunion

It must have felt like a dream come true for these canine siblings to be reunited with one another after six long months apart. While no dog wants to find themselves in the shelter, it can certainly make it more bearable to have a familiar face around. It’s no wonder why Godric and Sadie got along so perfectly at the shelter!

Sadie is a 6-year-old Plott Hound who had lived with the exact same family–including Godric–until she, too, was surrendered in late 2023. And just like with Godric, the dogs’ previous owners had asked the shelter to euthanize her. However, the rescue staff saw no reason for her to be euthanized, so she was placed on the adoption floor instead.

Since then, she’s been waiting patiently for a truly devoted owner to find her, but what she truly needed was her brother. Fortunately, the universe conspired to bring them together again, and the hope is that they will be adopted together someday very soon.

Behavioral ‘Concerns’ Around the Baby

But how could these sweet dogs end up in an animal shelter, let alone with an owner’s request to euthanize them? Even Hearts for Paws volunteers could see that there wasn’t a mean bone in either one of their bodies, but something clearly happened to leave the dog’s previous family feeling so strongly about their demise.

According to intake records from the rescue, Sadie was surrendered after she growled at the family’s baby. There is no mention of what was happening when the growl occurred, but it’s extremely unlikely that the hound dog was showing what canine behaviorists call aggression. Neither Sadie nor Godric showed any resource guarding in the shelter in or out of evaluations!

Six months later, Godric was surrendered with a request for euthanasia after he reportedly bit the baby. While this incident would understandably panic any parent, it was also completely preventable. That’s because he reacted to the baby crawling into his food bowl! Again, he showed zero signs of resource guarding while with Hearts for Paws, so his rescuers have no doubt that he’s a wonderful pet.

These adorable fur siblings are patiently waiting at Solano Animal Rescue in Northern California for the right foster or forever parent to find them. Currently, all applicants must live within an hour and a half of Davis or Sacramento, but if that includes you, feel free to browse their website to learn more!
