Rescuers Found Dog Living in Cardboard Box in Mexico Then Flew Her to USA to Find a Forever Home
All rescue dogs have a story worth sharing, but Xanthi had to get a stamp in her passport just to find a second chance at life. Her life on the streets in Guadalajara, Mexico, may have been short-lived, but she’s had quite the adventure since she and her sibling were rescued. Thanks to many selfless rescuers and a devoted foster family, Xanthi is getting more and more used to living the good life, but there’s still one thing missing.
She needs a forever home to call her own! This Australian Cattle Dog would make a fun and loving companion for many different dog owners, so read on to discover whether your home could be the right fit for this Washington-based rescue dog.
A Smart Street Dog Ready For Rescue
Xanthi was initially rescued at just three months old in 2022. She and her sibling were found in a cardboard box on the streets of Guadalajara, and they spent time in a local Mexican animal rescue, Huellitas Diferentes. In 2023, she was flown from Mexico to a rescue called Juno’s Den in Washington state.
By the second half of 2023, Xanthi was beginning to show her true colors. It was immediately clear that she’s as smart and social as a dog can be, and she loves nothing more than spending time with her foster family. It didn’t take long for her to get the hang of potty training and crate training, though she needed some extra support when it came to reigning in those herding instincts. After all, she is a Heeler!
At about two years old now, Xanthi has a lot more control over those compulsive behaviors. She’s still incredibly clever, and she could play all day long, but you may be competing with her ball for the number one spot in her heart. She even sleeps with it!
Finding Xanthi’s Forever Homen
It’s been over a year since Xanthi joined her foster family, and she’s made so much progress. Unfortunately, it’s been an up-and-down journey.
Xanthi got her hopes up when one family “begged” Juno’s Den for an adoption trial. As Juno’s Den explained in a Facebook update, the fun-loving dog was sadly returned after just five days. After this, Juno’s Den made a pact that she would only be adopted by an owner who understands the needs of a cattle dog like her. She needs an owner or family who’s home more often than not and who can provide her with enough attention, exercise, and mental stimulation to keep her feeling fulfilled.
This gorgeous girl with a fox-like tail has had plenty of canine friends throughout her time at rescue, though a meet and greet will need to happen to ensure she gets along with potential fur siblings. However, she’s not a great match for homes with cats due to her herding instincts!
