China’s People Say “No” to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival: Sign Petition to End This Cruelty for Good
In southern China’s Guangxi region, a dark stain on animal welfare persists: the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Each June, thousands of dogs—many of them stolen pets—are crammed into cages, transported for miles without food or water, and slaughtered in brutal ways.
Contrary to the myths surrounding this event, the festival is no ancient cultural tradition. It was started in 2009 or 2010 purely as a commercial stunt by dog meat traders eager to boost profits. There’s no music, no dancing, no celebration—just a marketplace of suffering.

The Truth About Yulin

The so-called Yulin Dog Meat Festival, also referred to as the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, spans 10 days starting June 21. During this time, the number of dogs killed for meat skyrockets.
At the festival’s peak in 2014, up to 15,000 dogs were slaughtered. Though numbers have declined in recent years—with reports suggesting around 3,000 dogs were killed in 2018—that’s still 3,000 lives lost in horrific conditions.
The cruelty begins long before these animals reach Yulin. Activists report dogs are packed into small wire cages, sometimes stacked on top of one another, with no food or water during journeys that can stretch 1,500 miles. Many arrive dehydrated, diseased, or injured. Disturbingly, dogs often still wear collars—clear evidence that some were stolen from loving homes.
Once there, the violence is unthinkable. Dogs are killed in public, often beaten, strangled, or stabbed in full view of one another. Some are skinned or boiled alive.

A Nation That Doesn’t Want This

Here’s the hopeful part: the majority of China’s population does not support the dog meat trade. In Yulin itself, 75% of residents have reportedly never eaten dog meat. Nationwide, about 70% of people have never consumed it at all.
In 2020, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued a significant statement:
“With the progress of human civilization and the public’s concern and preference for animal protection, dogs have changed from traditional domestic animals to companion animals. Dogs are generally not regarded as livestock and poultry around the world, and China should also not manage them as livestock and poultry.”
Following that declaration, cities like Shenzhen and Zhuhai banned dog meat consumption altogether.
The Yulin festival does not represent Chinese culture. It represents the greed of a small group of traders exploiting animals for profit.
The Call for Change
What happens in Yulin is more than just a local issue—it’s a global concern. The dog meat trade not only causes immense suffering but also endangers public health, playing a role in spreading diseases like rabies and cholera.

The time for action is now. By supporting stronger enforcement of existing laws, public education initiatives, and legal challenges to dog meat trading, we can help bring this cruel practice to an end.

Final Thoughts
The Yulin Dog Meat Festival is not a festival in any true sense of the word. It’s not rooted in history, nor is it supported by most of the Chinese population. It’s a grim spectacle that thrives on the suffering of stolen and trafficked dogs—all for the financial gain of a few.
But there’s hope. Change is happening. The Chinese government has acknowledged dogs as companion animals. Cities have begun banning dog meat. And activists, both in China and worldwide, are keeping up the pressure.
Your voice can add to this momentum. Help end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival—and the broader dog meat trade—by demanding accountability, compassion, and action.
