Neglected Poodle Becomes Rescue’s ‘Most Valuable Pup’ After Super Bowl Sunday Rescue

While millions of viewers tuned in to Super Bowl LVIII, a team of selfless volunteers from Dogwood Animal Rescue Project were rushing to the aid of a sweet Poodle in need of a helping paw. The Sonoma County, California, animal rescue heard about the dog from the person who had rescued him, but because she could not hold him any longer, they needed to act quickly.

The stray dog was first spotted in Northern California during the massive rainstorms in early February, though it took his rescuer several tries before she got ahold of him. She followed normal protocol: scanning for a microchip and issuing a 7-day stray hold, but she needed a rescue to take him now that no one had come forward. And that’s where the Dogwood team stepped in.

Meet Bob: The Other Super Bowl MVP

The nonprofit animal rescue was more than willing to help, but it was difficult to find someone to drive hours to pick up the Poodle pup on Super Bowl Sunday. However, all hope was not lost.

On a February 12 Facebook post, DARP explained, “We posted on our private volunteer page asking who could go get him, and in minutes, some awesome volunteers stepped up.” They dropped everything to pick up the young dog, arriving back at the rescue late at night on the 11th. Naturally, the rescue’s social media fans suggested a Kansas City Chiefs-inspired name to commemorate the occasion, but that just didn’t feel right in Niners country. Instead, they gave him a classic man’s name that no one can argue against: Bob!

When the newly-named pup arrived at Dogwood, he was so matted, dirty, and skinny that it was difficult to tell what breed he was. Judging by his coat, they could estimate that Bob is a Poodle or Doodle-type breed, but everything changed after a few minutes of decompressing and a major haircut.

Bob’s Life-Changing Grooming Appointment

Now that Bob was with his new rescuers and one step closer to his best life, he spent the night with K9 Country Club & Kitty Spa to decompress. These generous people also stepped up for him when the shelter had no foster homes immediately available, as did the groomers at Pampered Pups Salon & Spa who gave Bob a life-changing spa treatment. After losing all of that dirty, matted fur–he’s like a whole new dog!

Of course, losing all that fur also makes it easier to see just how emaciated this neglected dog is. He’s been slowly putting on weight since going home with his original rescuers–as putting on weight too fast can actually send dogs into organ failure–and he’s enjoying the luxurious warmth of his brand-new sweaters. Besides being underweight, he’s in pretty good health for a former stray dog!

He’ll be about 50-60 pounds when he reaches a healthy weight, but he’s looking for a forever home where he will be loved at every step of his journey. He can be shy and even defensive in the first few minutes of meeting someone, but a little bit of patience truly helps him thrive. His perfect owner will also be patient, especially as he adjusts to his new life, but in return, they’ll get a lifelong companion.

Bob is currently staying with a foster home through Dogwood Animal Rescue Project, and anyone who is interested in meeting him should contact the rescue through their website, email address ([email protected]), or Facebook page
