Golden Retriever Snubs New Puppy Sibling, but Undeterred Parents Knew Just What To Do
Things sometimes don’t go as planned when we bring a new dog home. Although we might expect our pups to have an instant bond, this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes, our first child can be jealous of their new sibling. So it’s essential to show them how wonderful having a full-time companion can be. (Watch Video Above)
These pet parents needed to do that when they brought a puppy home to their young Golden Retriever. This video shows a beautiful story, and it’s one of perseverance and hope.
Seeing these siblings’ bond now makes it hard to believe they didn’t get along from the start. Just like humans, not all friendships begin as expected. The effort put into these relationships makes them particularly special, as shown here.
Getting a New Puppy
Although they had planned on waiting for Rex to be older before getting a puppy when he was just seven months old, the opportunity presented for them to rescue their boy Eiger. Although both dogs were young, this introduction went differently than they had hoped. Their mom reports that Rex “Started acting like a jealous brother.” He also began exhibiting unfamiliar behaviors. “He wanted to sit in our laps and started crying a lot, which is something he never would do.” Little Eiger also appeared to be frightened by his unwelcoming big brother.
Having a Puppy Train a Puppy
Their mom reveals that they have been working with Rex on his commands, and when they began training Eiger alongside him, he started to “Look at Rex as his big brother.” They feel this training helped solidify their relationship. They also started taking them on walks and showing them “That their daily routine was going to be done together.” It’s always helpful when dogs have activities they can enjoy with each other.
Going From Acceptance to Friendship
Once Rex understood that his new brother wasn’t there to take his place, “He settled down, and Eiger started to initiate a lot of play.” From there, “They were best friends forever.” Now, this adorable pair is always together. Much to their parent’s surprise, they often find them snuggled together in Eiger’s crate, which is his safe space.
Becoming a Bonded Pair
After a few months, their bond grew more profound, and their mother reports that Rex even began grooming his little brother. Although many dogs can live happily together, their mother tells us they are indeed “A bonded pair.” Even though they may be opposites, they complement each other perfectly.
Stories like this one helped to remind us that even if our dogs aren’t the best of friends at first, it doesn’t mean they won’t be in the end. Like us, they sometimes need to get used to sharing their space and people. Once they do, they always have so much love to share.
