Too fearful for a health check, she seemed completely closed off—until pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka sat with her, patiently earning her trust. Slowly, the once-frightened pup transformed into a loving companion.
Breaking Down Walls: Earning Her Trust
Although the staff couldn’t complete her health check due to her fearful state, it was clear she had been neglected for a long time. Severely underweight with matted fur on her tail and behind her ears, she showed signs of prolonged neglect. Despite their efforts to gain her trust, she remained wary, though they briefly managed to coax her out of the kennel.
When Rocky met the scared and defensive pup, he saw beyond her fear—he saw a dog desperate for love. With patience and kindness, he earned her trust, and by the end, she was curled up in his lap. He assured her that none of this was her fault and his understanding pierced through her hard shell.
She Just Needed to Hear ‘Good Girl’
The moment Rocky gently petted her and called her a good girl, her eyes softened with gratitude and trust. In just minutes, her transformation was incredible—what began as growling and barking quickly turned into pure affection. By the end, the once-fearful pup had become the sweetest and calmest love bug.
Reflecting on her behavior, Rocky explained, “She’s not able to show her true self in a kennel environment. We are often just a reflection of our surroundings. Outside of this element… I bet she’s an amazing dog.”
A New Name, A New Hope
Without a tag or microchip, the dog’s past—and even her name—remains a mystery. Wanting to give her a fresh start, Rocky turned to his TikTok community, asking for name suggestions.
The response was overwhelming, and soon, the once-unnamed pup became Kay. Now, she just needs a patient, understanding family to give her the love and space she deserves. Due to her temperament, a home without young children would be the best fit for her.
