When you think of corgis, you think of bicolor coats and stubby legs. Add in some pointy ears, and a fluffy bum, and you’ve got a corgi! But what happens when you cross a corgi with another breed? You get something amazingly cute and delightfully unique.
Today, I’ll be focusing on the cowboy corgi, a cross between an Australian cattle dog and a Pembroke Welsh corgi. Unfortunately, the cowgirl corgi is a bit too busy on the plains to show up!

These pups are generally grouped together with American corgis, which are similar but not quite the same. An American corgi is a cross between a Pembroke and a cardigan corgi, although the results may look similar.
What Are Cowboy Corgis Like?
Overall, cowboy corgis are energetic, a bit stubborn, and very loyal. These dogs are known for their ability to wiggle into strange spaces and get their noses into trouble! It’s not uncommon for cowboy corgis to spend much of their time causing mischief.
These dogs need plenty of exercise to ensure that they don’t cause too much trouble. Without this stimulation, they’ll divert their attention towards whatever else they happen to find, and that doesn’t always end well for owners.
However, these dogs are very affectionate. They love to spend time with their owners, and they bond quickly. As a trade-off, this means that they require plenty of attention and love. If a cowboy corgi feels that they’re not getting their fair share of attention, they’re likely to act out and exhibit symptoms of separation anxiety. To avoid this, many owners are quick to enroll their cowboy corgis in behavioral training.
How Trainable Are Cowboy Corgis?
Cowboy corgis are incredibly intelligent, and this is a bit of a two-way street!
On one hand, this crossbreed’s intelligence endears them to trainers. They’re quick to learn and easily remember new information.
However, this intelligence also lets them know what isn’t acceptable. As I mentioned before, they’ll happily use this information to their own advantage if they’re feeling neglected.
Keep in mind that — due in part to their herding instinct — these pups will require plenty of training before they are introduced to small children and other pets. Otherwise, they may nip at them! Proper and early socialization will help deter some of these behaviors, but the safest bet is to keep a cowboy corgi away from small children.
Grooming the Cowboy Corgi
Another important thing to keep in mind about the cowboy corgi is its thick and gorgeous coat. These beautiful dogs are almost always shedding, so they need plenty of grooming.
Cowboy corgis are not hypoallergenic! In fact, many people with allergies are unable to withstand these pups due to their thick, fluffy, and constantly shedding fur! If you’re having an allergy-prone friend over after procuring a cowboy corgi companion, it’s a good idea to offer some Benadryl.
If you plan on adopting or buying a cowboy corgi, you’ll need to adjust your daily routine a bit. These pups require roughly 20 minutes of brushing daily! Otherwise, their luxurious double coat — which is responsible for their adorable “fluff” — will become matted and tangled.

No, the American Kennel Club does not recognize the cowboy corgi as a breed. Right now, these pups are considered a mixed breed, and crosses are not accepted by the AKC.
The most widely recognized corgi is the Pembroke Welsh corgi. These pups are stout but slender, and they have “thinner” bones. After birth, Pembroke Welsh corgis usually have their tails docked to adhere to breed standards.

Cardigan Welsh corgis are the slightly larger, less common corgis. They have a very similar appearance to their Pembroke cousins, but their bones are denser. These dogs usually retain their tails, and they have a “rounder” appearance. Where many people recognize Pembrokes for their rectangular shape, cardigan corgis have a much softer shape.

There is no such thing as a cowgirl corgi! This term is sometimes used to describe corgi x Australian cattle dog mixes that are female, but both terms are used to refer to this mix.
