Cat and Puppy Were Mortal Enemies Until One Hilariously Adorable Moment
For three years, Oscar the cat ruled the roost as the solo pet in his household. Used to being the center of attention, the 16-pound feline didn’t warm up easily to other animals encroaching on his territory. That all changed when a rambunctious puppy named Riley came along.
“It was awkward in the beginning when Riley came home to meet Oscar,” Oscar’s owner recalls. “Riley was very yippy, biting a lot as puppies do. Oscar kept his distance from this tiny, barking furball.”
At first, the dog and cat wanted nothing to do with each other. Riley, lacking any manners, barked and nipped at the larger Oscar. But the seasoned cat had been around many dogs before.
“Oscar wasn’t afraid at all,” his owner says. “He was just like ‘what is this little thing?'”
A Patient Cat Mentor
Despite their rocky start, it didn’t take long for an unlikely friendship to blossom. Within two months, the owner started finding Oscar and Riley snuggling together on the couch or playfully wrestling under the bed.
“One time I caught them playing tug-of-war with one of my workout bands!” the owner laughed. “Riley had it looped around Oscar, pulling him around like a leash.”
As the rambunctious pup, Riley clearly craved the attention and playtime that Oscar, the more paternal figure, was happy to provide through cleaning and cuddling. Riley would nudge the cat for pets and Oscar would oblige by licking her face and ears.
“It’s really funny to see a dog nudging a cat for affection like she would a human,” their owner remarked. “Sometimes Riley gets a bit too eager and smushes Oscar’s head into the couch. But he doesn’t seem to mind from his little sister.”
Today, the dog and cat are truly inseparable best friends who take care of each other’s needs. Their remarkable bond shows that animalsof all kinds can find lasting companionship, even in the most unlikely pairings.
