Beautiful Red Shepherd Thinks I’m Going To Hit Him
Redford, a striking 4-year-old red German Shepherd, has a story that tugs at the heartstrings. Found wandering the streets and subsequently picked up by Animal Control, he was brought to the shelter where his unique all-red coat immediately caught the eye of Rocky.
His Eyes Reveal A Story He Can’t Tell
The first time I laid eyes on Redford, I was immediately struck by his striking appearance. A good-looking Red Shepherd, he sat there in the shelter, his eyes revealing a story that he couldn’t tell. His flinch at every movement, the twitchiness, and his hesitancy with treats hinted at a past that might not have been very kind to him. I couldn’t help but wonder, what had happened to him before he ended up here?
Lack Of Positive Human Interaction
As I sat down with him, it became evident that Redford carried a lot of baggage. I want to clarify that I don’t know for sure if he’s been abused, but his abnormal twitchiness and unfamiliarity with treats suggested a lack of positive human interaction. Despite all this, there was an undeniable sweetness about him, but it was clear he would need time and patience to truly blossom.
Two Weeks Made All The Difference
Fast forward a couple of weeks, and the transformation in Redford was nothing short of amazing. He was no longer the scared, twitchy dog I first met. Instead, he was playful, trusting, and showed a zest for life that was heartwarming to witness. His excitement, his newfound joy in little games, and his willingness to trust again were testaments to the incredible resilience of dogs and the amazing work of the shelter staff who worked with him daily.
What Breed Is Redford?
Curiosity got the better of me, and I found myself pondering about Redford’s breed. He was obviously a Shepherd, but what else was mixed in there? So, I decided to get a DNA test kit. It was a fun endeavor, especially considering how unique Redford was. Every dog is unique, but there was something extra special about him. Understanding his breed mix could provide insights into his traits and help his future family understand him better. Whether he was mixed with Chow Chow or Kelpie, it would give a glimpse into his personality and potential health needs.
The Embark Breed + Health Test tests for over 250+ genetic health risks across more than 350 breeds, types, and varieties. While waiting for the DNA test results, I engaged the staff and volunteers in a little guessing game about Redford’s breed mix. The guesses varied from Chow and Setter to possibly a bit of Akita or even Belgian Shepherd. Regardless of what the results would reveal, one thing was clear: it didn’t matter. Redford was unique and deserving of love, no matter his breed or mix.
But Redford needed something more – a forever home. A place where he would be loved, cherished, and allowed to live his days in happiness and security. So, I reached out to the community, asking for help to find Redford a home. Sharing his story could be the key to unlocking a future where he is loved unconditionally.
