Abandoned Pitbull Left on Highway in Wire Crate Greets Rescuer with Sweetest Gesture. Now She Needs a Home.

Dogs trust their owners with their love and with their lives, which is why it’s so enraging to hear about any case when a dog is neglected or abused. These animals often have no way of helping themselves, especially when left in a dire situation like Jessie’s. Fortunately, there are kind people in the world who want to help animals in need.

Abandoned and In Danger

I can only imagine how one selfless good samaritan felt as he pulled over his car to investigate a dog crate on the side of the highway on March 22. The thought of any animal purposely left somewhere is enough to break any pet owner’s heart, but it’s even more upsetting to consider that the person who had Jessie first chose to leave her on the side of a busy highway where she could get injured. Let’s just say, everyone is thanking their lucky stars that neither Jessie nor her hero were hurt!

When this kind man spotted the wire dog crate Jessie was in, he was driving on the onramp of Interstate 10 in San Bernardino, California. This happened in the neighborhood known as Tippecanoe, though no one has any leads about who may have placed her there. The poor dog was incredibly thirsty by the time she was found, but she was sweet to her rescuer nonetheless.

According to the City of San Bernardino Animal Services, this sweet Pit Bull was “so happy and excited to see a kind person. She licked his hands through the wire crate.” How precious! Unfortunately, her rescuer had 3 dogs of his own at home and was unable to add to his pack. Instead, he brought her to the county animal shelter in hopes of finding her a loving forever home.

From Forever to Final Chance

Jessie became available for adoption on March 26, though her time in the shelter hasn’t been easy. The 2-year-old, 70-pound dog has been much more reserved and fearful in her kennel than she was with her rescuer, but this isn’t unheard of when a dog is adjusting to a shelter environment. Sadly, her fearful behavior has earned her a spot on the euthanasia list despite her short time at the shelter.

As a networker for the San Bernardino shelter explained, her “kennel manager states she has a flagging tail, ears back, growls, and is barrier reactive in her kennel.” These are all clear signs of stress in dogs, but it does not mean she deserves to be on the euthanasia list. However, after multiple evaluations that resulted in the same condition–fearful– she’s been put in a position no dog ever wants to be in.

Shelter networker Lois Chisholm visited Jessie shortly after she was placed on the dreaded list in hopes of advocating for her on social media. In the comments of a pleading Facebook post, she even shared a video of Jessie interacting and being fed a treat. By the looks of it, she’s not fearful all the time!

At this time, Jessie is only available for rescue only–meaning individual adopters cannot adopt her. Licensed animal rescues can inquire about her by calling City of San Bernardino Animal Services at (909) 384-1304. Rescues can also email [email protected] or visit the shelter between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Jessie is waiting for you!
