Tiny Dog Abandoned at Shelter Night Drop Gives Birth Alone, Then The Unexpected Happens

A 6-pound rescue dog named Tiara was surrendered anonymously in the middle of the night to a local shelter while in active labor. Tiara ended up giving birth to a single, stillborn puppy in the shelter’s night drop kennel area before being discovered by staff the next morning.

The two-year-old pup had lost everything, including her puppy, in this tragic ordeal. She understandably became incredibly depressed following the loss of her baby and her previous life. The municipal shelter quickly reached out to rescue partners, including the Calaveras Humane Society, to find Tiara a foster situation where she could heal.

Abandoned While in Labor

Before Tiara arrived at the Calaveras Humane Society on the week of February 23, she had quite an ordeal while at another local shelter. This municipal shelter first met her one morning after she had been left in the night drop the previous evening, but it just wasn’t her surrender that had them feeling for her.

Tiara had been left in night drop while in active labor. Overnight, she gave birth to a single, stillborn puppy, whom rescuers also found in the morning. She did not have any more puppies after being found in the morning, and she understandably became incredibly depressed following the loss of her baby and her previous life.

And that’s when the Calaveras Humane Society stepped in. The city shelter contacted several of its rescue partners, including the humane society, to see if someone could help Tiara feel like her best self while looking for a forever home. Naturally, the generous rescue staff offered to take her in!

From Alone to Forever Home

Tiara was transferred to the humane society in Angels Camp, California, in late February. She was immediately greeted with plenty of love and attention, and she became a completely different dog in a matter of days. She quickly showed her love for people and for attention, and her new friends even used a dog sling to carry her around. She loved it!

The one thing she didn’t love was the other dogs at the rescue. She “copped a bit of a diva attitude” with the medium and large-sized shelter dogs, but that all changed when she met her new fur sibling, who’s around the same size.

That’s right–Tiara was adopted! Just hours after the rescue shared her story in a Facebook post, her new dad and canine sibling came to the shelter to meet her.

What Is Night Drop?

Even though the thought of a dog giving birth alone in a kennel could shatter any dog owner’s heart, Tiara’s rescue may not have been possible if it weren’t for the municipal shelter’s night drop. But what is night drop, exactly?

Not all animal shelters have this emergency feature, and many people don’t even know it exists. It could look different from one shelter to the next, but the night drop area is a group of kennels where animals can be dropped off when the shelter isn’t open. This is only to be used in an emergency and not as an alternative to properly surrendering an animal, but it is a much kinder thing to do for an animal than letting them loose on the streets or chaining them up somewhere.

“Night drops exist to provide a safe space for Good Samaritans to leave stray dogs they find during the night,” explains Rocky Kanaka, a Pet Rescue Advocate. Ordinarily, shelters mandate that dog owners wishing to relinquish their pets do so in person and during regular business hours, often involving a surrender fee. “To avoid this fee, some individuals falsely claim their dog is a stray, opting to leave them anonymously at the night drop,” Kanaka adds.

While it’s heartbreaking to know that Tiara gave birth and began grieving the loss of her baby while in night drop, it’s still a massive relief to know that this pint-sized pup got help when she needed it the most. She’s now becoming her best self in her forever home, but the Calaveras Humane Society still has plenty of loving dogs and cats in search of their forever homes.
