Stressed Mama Dog Abandoned Outside Shelter With Box of Puppies Needs a Home
In March of 2024, staff from SPCA Westchester in Briarcliff Manor, New York, arrived at work to find a surprise waiting for them in the shelter parking lot. A terrified mama dog had been abandoned with her four puppies. The mama was tied to a crate holding two of the pups while the other two squirmed beside her loose in a cardboard box. The mama dog—now named Nora—was visibly shaking as the shelter staff carefully approached her.

Sweet Nora allowed her rescuers to put a leash around her neck and gather up her pups, who were at least 2–3 months old. Nora was wearing a collar already, so she had once had an owner who had decided to dump her and her babies cruelly. Terrified and confused, Nora accepted help from the SPCA Westchester team but was still in shock that her human had abandoned her.
Puppies Find Foster Homes, Mama Succumbs To Stress
Once Nora and her puppies settled into the shelter, foster homes stepped up almost immediately to take the puppies. Volunteers were eager to help these young pups find their forever homes and remove them from the stressful shelter environment. Since then all four of the puppies have been adopted! Nora wasn’t so lucky.
No one stepped up to take Nora, and now that her job as mama dog was finished, she was all alone in a shelter kennel. SPCA Westchester staff pleaded for someone to foster her in an interview with ABC 7 news, saying that she needed somewhere safe and calm to recuperate from the traumatic experience of being dumped. Unfortunately, no one stepped forward, and Nora is still waiting for her freedom ride.
All About Nora: Abandoned Mama Dog Looking For a Home
Nora is a 2 to 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that shelter staff describe as a little skittish but very sweet and gaining confidence every day.
Shelter life has been very stressful for Nora, and she can seem a little standoffish or even aggressive when approached in her kennel. Once Nora comes out of her kennel and has a few minutes to warm up, she is affectionate, playful, and goofy. Nora loves toys and spending one-on-one time with humans, and she gets the most adorable zoomies when she is excited.
