Heartbreak After Adopted Pit Bull Returned to Shelter After One Hour

Walking out of the shelter doors with an adoptive family is a dream that constantly rings in the hearts of all shelter dogs. Princess — a 6-year-old Pit Bull Terrier Mix with the most infectious smile and stunning brindle coat ever — was a resident at the Stanislaus Animal Shelter when this dream finally came true for her.

Princess felt like she had hit the forever home jackpot as she trotted out of the shelter with pure joy, her new family by her side. What she never imagined was that her newfound happiness would be short-lived and that she’d be back in her kennel after just one hour of her having a taste of the outside world.

Even sadder is that Princess isn’t to blame for the events leading to her surrender; she was simply misjudged.

Unfortunate Turn of Events

Like every other dog that bids the kennel life goodbye, Princess expected that her trip from the shelter would end with her finding herself in a home environment, not anywhere else. Unknown to her, her adoptive person had other plans in mind. Instead of taking Princess directly home, they first took her to a bustling off-leash dog park, which can be a scary, emotionally triggering environment for a dog that has just left another equally overwhelming environment (the shelter).

Unfortunately, while there, an off-leash dog approached an already uncomfortable Princess, and a fight between the two erupted. As Princess’s adopter tried to break up the fight, she accidentally got bit by Princess. Sadly, this incident landed Princess back at the shelter’s doorstep with a bite history on her records.

Truth is, all this would have been avoided if only Princess’s adopter had adhered to the 3-3-3 rule of adoption. “I often talk about the 3,3,3 rule — three days to decompress, three weeks to learn the routine, and three months to fully settle in,” says pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka. “It’s a commitment, a journey of mutual understanding and patience.”

Princess needed to decompress in a calm home environment before being introduced to an overly stimulating environment like the dog park. She simply reacted the same way any other well-mannered dog in an uncomfortable situation like hers would, but that doesn’t mean that’s how she always behaves.

Now, all Princess needs is a loving, patient adopter who’ll commit to the 3-3-3 rule to make her transition from the shelter a seamless one.
