Stray Golden Retriever Loses Leg but Wins Hearts – Now She Hopes for a Forever Home.
In most animal shelters across the U.S., there’s an abundance of senior dogs who often spend much of their time staring desperately through the bars of their kennels, envying the younger dogs getting adopted before them. Among these amazing old souls longing to have a family to call her own is Maggie, a three-legged senior Golden Retriever currently at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter.
Maggie — fondly nicknamed “Marvelous Maggie” — is perhaps one of the most chilled senior dogs you’ll ever meet. Her sweet, calm nature has earned her a top spot in the hearts of shelter staff, who just don’t understand why this gray-muzzled beauty hasn’t found a home yet.
A Rough Past
According to April Peiffer — the Community Programs Coordinator at Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter — Maggie has been their resident for three months now. She was a lost dog who, prior to her arrival at the shelter, was often seen wandering the streets.
Maggie was struck by a vehicle that left her in terrible shape, so much so the staff at the shelter thought she wouldn’t make it. “She was brought to us by an animal control officer when they were contacted by a member of the public. We are told that she may have been hit by a car, though that wasn’t witnessed, so it is only the suspicion,” says April.
Unfortunately, this horrific accident led to Maggie sustaining permanent nerve damage on her right front leg, leaving the shelter with no choice but to amputate her.
In addition, Maggie was also found with maggot-infested puncture wounds on her back. “This little lady was in really bad shape, and while I did not see her prior to her recovery, I am told by other staff members that they were not certain she’d recover. She proved us wrong, and she’s now doing amazing,” explains April.
Could You Be Maggie’s Forever Person?
Now fully healed, Maggie craves nothing more than a warm bed and forging a lifetime connection with a forever family. She’s a gentle, low-energy pup who won’t run you ragged with endless exercise demands. So, if you’re a non-active household looking for an affectionate, laid-back dog who’s a certified couch potato and snuggle queen, then Maggie’s your girl.
Although she may seem shy at first around new people, it doesn’t take long before she warms up to you and unleashes her lovey-dovey side. She does great with cats and chickens (her previous foster family witnessed this first-hand), and the shelter believes she may also get along wonderfully with other dogs. Not to mention, Maggie is best suited for a home with older kids because she’s all about peace and quietness, which may not be present in a home with young, rambunctious kids.
Opening your home to Maggie means having an incredible companion who will spend the rest of her life showing you gratitude — in form of endless smooches — for giving her a chance to live out her golden years in a warm, loving home.
