Resilient Dog Waits Half a Decade in Shelter Before Finding Foster Home

Every shelter dog has a unique tale, but some stories, like that of Little Ritchie, deserve to be shared far and wide. For 5 long years, this resilient Pit Bull mix patiently waited at a New York shelter for a new home. – an entire half-decade, making his stay longer than any other dog at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh, New York. His prolonged journey, filled with hope and resilience, not only saw him waiting for a fresh start but also winning the affection of thousands.

5 Years of Waiting in the Shelter

When this handsome guy first arrived at the shelter in August 2018, he’d had it rough. He was afraid, injured, and overprotective of his food. He wasn’t comfortable being handled, but he began a life-changing transformation thanks to his friends at the shelter. They dedicated lots of time to desensitization, socialization, and training, so by the time he watched his 2,000th day at the shelter come and go, he was an entirely different dog.

Despite his incredible transformation, Little Ritchie only had 3 potential adopters over his five-year wait. While none of these folks were a perfect fit, the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter continued to post his unbelievable progress–until something clicked.

So, what’s different at this rescue? Even though Little Ritchie had already spent half a decade with one hardworking rescue, Long Island Pit Stop has the resources and availability to get this handsome boy into a foster home ASAP. However, that doesn’t mean he went straight to a home! He’s spending a few weeks in ‘board n’ train,’ a program that allows him to decompress, play, and work on his skills via multiple training sessions every day. His new friends couldn’t be happier with the way he’s settling in, and they are excited to see how much he will love the foster home that’s already in place for him.
