She Trapped Pets in Cages and Walked Away — The Horror Police Found Inside Was Unimaginable
A Disturbing Discovery in Cottageville
In a heartbreaking case of neglect, authorities in South Carolina discovered a scene of unimaginable cruelty inside a home in Cottageville. A woman, later identified as Toni Avant, had collected dozens of animals—many believed to be strays—and confined them in cages inside her house. But instead of providing care, she abandoned them.
Neighbors had become increasingly concerned after noticing she was collecting more and more animals, but they hadn’t seen her at the property in days. A foul stench from the home became so intense that passersby could detect it from the driveway. When Animal Control and deputies with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office arrived to investigate, they were horrified by what they saw.
Cages Filled with Death and Desperation

Looking through the windows, officers spotted multiple dogs still alive—but also many more animals that had died and were left to rot. Once inside, they found 22 surviving animals and numerous deceased ones, surrounded by filth and neglect. Some animals had reportedly been dead for so long that their remains had begun to decay beyond recognition.
Authorities described the conditions as “deplorable” and unfit for any living creature. Avant later admitted to taking in stray animals and confessed that some of them might have actually been lost pets belonging to other families.

Criminal Charges Filed: But Is It Enough?
Avant was arrested and charged with 16 counts of felony animal cruelty. According to officials, the charges stem from the March 19 incident when the house was first reported. Investigators believe many of the animals suffered long-term neglect, starvation, and a lack of basic medical care.

“All of the animals now have a chance at loving homes and are receiving the care they deserve,” said Colleton County Animal Services Director Laura Clark. The surviving dogs and other pets have since been taken in by rescue organizations and are being rehabilitated for adoption.

A Pattern of Violence Against Animals
This horrific case is part of a larger trend that points to the urgent need for reform. In cases like this—where dozens of animals are neglected or killed over time—it’s not enough to rely on minor penalties. There must be stronger consequences and oversight.
This isn’t a one-time lapse in judgment. It was prolonged, systemic cruelty. The animals didn’t just suffer—they died slowly, surrounded by the bodies of others who had already perished. And yet this woman could walk free again unless the justice system does more.
👉Sign the petition now to help us push for:
- A permanent ban on animal ownership for Toni Avant
- Mandatory psychological evaluation and counseling
- Tougher enforcement of animal cruelty laws in South Carolina
These Animals Deserved Better
The surviving pets—many of whom had been trapped without food or water—now have a second chance, thanks to the quick actions of local authorities and rescue groups. But the ones who didn’t make it? They deserve justice.
By speaking out and demanding change, we can make sure their suffering wasn’t in vain.

If we don’t act now, what’s to stop this from happening again in another home, another town, another state? Stand with us in making sure animal cruelty never goes unchecked.
Together, we can be their voice.
