Nearly 200 Dogs Found Stacked in Basement Crates in Alabama—Petition Demands Justice
In a shocking animal cruelty case out of Lauderdale County, Alabama, authorities say nearly 200 dogs were found living in deplorable conditions on a single property—many of them confined to stacked crates in a basement with little or no access to food and water.
The scale of the situation was so overwhelming that it took officials two full days to remove all 191 dogs from the property.
Dogs Allegedly Kept Like Storage Items

According to the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, deputies executed a search of the property on March 30 after concerns about the animals’ living conditions.
What they reportedly found was heartbreaking.
Authorities said most of the dogs were confined to cages stacked on top of one another in the basement. Investigators described conditions so severe that many of the animals lacked adequate access to basic necessities, including food and water.
Animal welfare workers spent two days removing all 191 dogs from the property.
These weren’t objects in storage. They were living, feeling animals who depended entirely on humans for care.

Investigation Leads to Arrests
Following the rescue, authorities launched a criminal investigation that included reviewing veterinary records and evaluating the condition of the animals.
According to officials, three individuals—Hunter Hancock, Karolyn Richardson, and John Richardson—were ultimately arrested and charged with multiple counts of cruelty to animals.

Investigators determined that at least four dogs met the legal criteria for animal cruelty charges following a review of the evidence and consultation with the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office.
The owners later signed over possession of the dogs to Florence/Lauderdale Animal Services.
But for many animal advocates, serious questions remain about how conditions were allowed to deteriorate to this extent before intervention occurred.
More Than a Numbers Story
The number alone—191 dogs—is staggering.
But behind that figure are individual animals who spent their days confined in cramped cages instead of receiving exercise, affection, enrichment, and proper care.
Many likely never experienced the simple joys dogs deserve: a comfortable bed, regular meals, fresh water, playtime, or the companionship of a loving family.
Authorities continue reviewing evidence related to the case, and advocates hope the investigation will provide a complete picture of how these animals were treated.
Dogs Deserve Better Than This

Cases involving large-scale neglect can sometimes fade into statistics.
But these 191 dogs were not numbers.
They were living creatures who relied on people for protection and instead allegedly found themselves trapped in conditions no animal should endure.
