Starved, Buried, and Left to Suffer: Iowa Case Sparks Calls for Justice for Two Dogs
In a deeply disturbing case out of Ottumwa, Iowa, two dogs were found severely neglected—one already dead, the other barely clinging to life. Authorities say the animals were starved for so long that the damage was irreversible.
The Ottumwa Police Department responded to a tip in December reporting that two dogs were “severely neglected and extremely malnourished.” What they discovered was heartbreaking.
One Dog Dead, Another Left with Permanent Damage
When officers executed a search warrant at the home, they found the body of a Brittany Spaniel named Delilah buried in the yard. A necropsy later confirmed she died from malnourishment—her body had no fat remaining around her organs.
The second dog, a German Shepherd named Native, was found alive but emaciated. He was rushed to a veterinarian, where it was determined that the prolonged starvation caused permanent damage to his heart muscles.
Native survived—but his life will never be the same.

Charges Filed—But Advocates Say More Is Needed
Authorities arrested Jason Lee Haut, 45, and Stephanie Michelle Haut, 35, charging them with animal neglect resulting in serious injury and death. While charges have been filed, many advocates believe the current penalties may not go far enough to prevent future harm.
