Newborn Pups Cling To Injured Mom Through Bitter Cold Detroit Nights – Rescuers Surprised by Mama Dog’s Age

Every day, the rescuers and volunteers with Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue find and save dogs in deplorable conditions. This nonprofit is dedicated to rescuing sick, injured, and pregnant dogs of all breeds who are living on the streets of The Motor City, but even these pros were shocked, heartbroken, and even angered at the state of one particular family of dogs.

A Baby Having Babies On the Street

Millie and her puppies were found on February 1, according to a Facebook post from the rescue, though how she was brought to their attention wasn’t mentioned. This ‘emergency street crew’ urges Detroit locals to text them if they come across a stray dog in need of help, and this may very well be the case here as well.

When the Pit Crew reached the dogs, Mama Millie was nursing six tiny puppies, with several others already deceased. At the time, all pups were freezing, and three were near death. Millie remained attentive to her days-old babies despite a gunshot wound that left her unable to walk on her front leg, though rescuers quickly swooped in to transport the family to a veterinary hospital. There, an x-ray revealed that Millie–who was only nine months old herself–was recovering from a gunshot wound that had shattered her shoulder and never healed.  Fortunately, the Pit Crew’s efforts made it possible for the dogs’ healing journey to begin.

The Rescue Process For Millie & Pups

Miraculously, all six puppies survived their teeth-chattering ordeal, and they fully recovered in the warmth of the Detroit veterinary clinic. And three days after their rescue, the Pit Crew updated their fans with a highly-anticipated video! In the clip, the puppies peacefully napped at their mom’s feet while Millie lazily looked around, but their relaxation represents so much more about their stress-free futures.

Although Millie still has her pups to care for for a few more months, she’ll soon get to be the baby, too. She will need to undergo an amputation due to the irreversible damage in her leg, but virtually all tripod dogs live happy, healthy lives! After undergoing the procedure, the whole family will be transferred to one of the Detroit Pit Crew’s 21 partner organizations in the area that help rescue pets find their perfect forever homes.

In the meantime, Detroit Pit Crew is taking donations via their website or Venmo (@Detroitpitcrew) to help fund Millie’s care. This 501C3 non-profit organization relies solely on donations to fund their rescue efforts, so every penny counts.
