Everyone loves beagles! These adorable mid-sized hunting dogs were bred to be the ideal companions on long horseback deer hunting sessions, but many modern beagles have adapted to being amazing couch snugglers. There are a few variations of the classic beagle, and one of the rarest and most prized is the gorgeous lemon beagle.

What is a Lemon Beagle?

Lemon beagles are a color variant of the standard purebred beagle. As such, this makes all lemon beagles purebred beagles by default. Whereas the AKC recognizes the standard beagle for its gorgeous white, black, and brown tricolor coat, a lemon beagle will have fur that appears almost solid white and the spots are a lighter lemony color!

What Are Lemon Beagles Like?

Here you can see the difference between a standard beagle and a lemon beagle

Because a lemon beagle is, by default, a standard purebred beagle, they have all of the same personality and physical traits. Small lemon beagles max out at roughly 13 inches tall and 20 pounds, while the larger variations will be 13–15 inches tall and weigh around 20–30 pounds.

What to Watch Out For

Beagles aren’t all fun and games, though! Look out for their stubborn streak and be sure to exercise them often. Their rambunctious bodies and energetic minds require a good amount of stimulation, so you’ll need to plan for lots of walks and games!

Another thing to keep in mind about lemon drop beagles is their health. These dogs share the purebred beagle’s health issues, which include hip problems and obesity. Because of their rarity, they’re also rather pricey. Expect to deal out $700–$1,200 for a lemon beagle pup!

Obviously, you may not find a lemon drop beagle at any of these (or your local) adoption shelters. These pups are extremely rare, and it’s going to be hard to locate one in a shelter. If you do manage to find a lemon beagle at your local rescue, however, you may want to consider picking up a lottery ticket!

You might try a pit bull beagle mix. This crossbreed may be easier to come by in a shelter.
