Heartbreak for Senior Shelter Dog as She Faces her 3rd Holiday Season Without a Family

The holiday season is almost here, and most of us are already plotting out a Thanksgiving menu as we anticipate spending time with family and friends. But for staff at the Nancy. J Brua Animal Care Center in Sierra Vista, Arizona, there’s one thing coming between their excitement for the upcoming holidays: the fate of one of their longest shelter residents, Sally.

Sally — a 9-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier with the most infectious smile ever — has been at the shelter for 820 days. That’s slightly over two years. With no pending adoption application, staff are worried about Sally spending Thanksgiving and Christmas at the shelter for the third time in a row. They’re also afraid that her 10th birthday will find her at the shelter and not in a loving home.

Holidays Behind Shelter Doors

For the 2+ years that Sally has been at the shelter, she’s not had the privilege to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with a real family. It’s a pity to imagine this sweet-faced senior missing out on the holiday fun once again, given how much love she has to share.

As she waits desperately in her kennel, Sally’s heart breaks whenever she sees other dogs walk out of the shelter with their new families while she remains behind. She’s amazing in every way, and it doesn’t make sense why she’s been repeatedly overlooked ever since she came to the shelter back in August 2022. All Sally yearns for is to find a forever home before the much-awaited holiday arrives.

Sally’s Counting on You for a Happy Ending

Being an old soul, Sally doesn’t have a complicated list of demands. The only thing that matters to her is finding a loving family that will cherish her for a lifetime, accept her cuddles, spoil her with treats, and enjoy her company as much as she enjoys theirs.

Besides her love for short walks, sweet Sally also likes to relax next to her humans. She is well-behaved, treat-motivated, understands obedience commands, and has a soft spot for children. Sally’s ideal home is preferably one without cats or dogs, but if her potential new family already has other dogs, the shelter insists on a meet and greet. Sally is currently undergoing training under a staff member, but this training will be transferred to her new family once she’s adopted.
