Dog Spent Years Being Forced To Birth Puppies. She Didn’t even Have a Name. Now She Needs a Loving Home

Unethical breeding and pet overpopulation are serious issues in the United States. The Humane Society of the United States estimates there are around 10,000 puppy mills in the US and around 2.6 million puppies are produced by licensed and unlicensed puppy mills/backyard breeders annually. Many breeders do not require a USDA breeding license—for example breeders with less than four breeding females are not required to acquire a license for their operations, and having a license doesn’t necessarily mean a breeder is using ethical practices.

Beth is one of the many dogs who has been used for unethical, unrestricted breeding. A beautiful almost 6-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog/Husky mix, Beth has spent most of her life in a small kennel inside a barn on her owner’s property where she gave birth to countless litters of puppies. Beth’s owners clearly didn’t care about her—they never even gave her a name and simply called her “Dog.” Thankfully, Beth is no longer being used for breeding, and is now safely in the care of One Dog At a Time, a rescue group in Lewistown, Pennsylvania.

“Beth is learning a whole new life outside of the farm. She is scared of new things and has only lived in a barn stall her whole life,” say rescuers from One Dog At a Time. “She is playful but will need time to open up.”

What Beth’s Future Family Needs To Know

Beth is almost six-years-old (born December 7th, 2018) but is still very active and needs a home with a fenced-in yard since she loves to be outside. A medium-large dog at about 75 pounds, Beth is a black Bernese Mountain Dog x Siberian Husky mix with beautiful red and white markings. Beth has never lived in a home before and will need a family that will show her patience while she acclimates to her new lifestyle.

Beth is playful and loves other dogs, but would prefer a home with no cats. While she enjoys children, Beth needs an adult only home or a home with older children with dog experience that can respect her boundaries. While she can take a few moments to warm up, once Beth gets comfortable she loves everyone!

If you live in or near Lewistown, Pennsylvania and are interested in making this sweet retired mama dog part of your family, you can apply to adopt Beth online through One Dog At a Time.
