Abandoned Pit Bull Never Played With A Toy Until Kind Stranger Showed Him Love: Now He Seeks Forever Home

Meet Bear, a 2-year-old Pitbull mix whose name is short for “teddy bear.” In October 2023, he was found running through the busy streets of San Antonio. Fortunately, Bear was rescued by a kind woman who fosters dogs, saving him from ending up in a shelter. Since then, this affectionate pup has been patiently waiting to find his forever family to shower with love.

A Good Samaritan Notices Bear Running the Streets

Alexis is a volunteer who fosters animals in need with Footbridge Foundation, a local San Antonio rescue.  She first encountered Bear near her apartment complex roaming the nearby streets. “He was a larger dog with a very gorgeous, almost black dark brindle fur pattern. And he was very thin,” Alexis recalled. It appeared that Bear had been abandoned and was spending his days searching for food to survive.

With her experience fostering rescues, Alexis couldn’t simply let the stray pup fend for himself and decided to give him with the care and shelter he desperately needed. By offering Bear some food, Alexis was able to coax the stray pup into her apartment. She soon realized that he was frightened and ill-equipped to survive on his own. “He didn’t know how to play with toys. He didn’t know how to get into a car,” Alexis recalled. She had to patiently teach him everything, from basic obedience to familiar experiences like car rides. Because of his love for treats, Alexis quickly discovered that Bear was a fast learner and highly trainable.

Bear Quickly Learned How to Become Part of the Family

It quickly became clear that Bear was a bundle of energetic joy who loved to run and go on long walks. “We go on walks together, 2-5 miles at a time. He loves to spend time outdoors,” Alexis shared. She added, “I know a lot of people don’t want to deal with the amount of energy he has, but Sweet Bear’s enthusiasm for attention and food makes him highly trainable.”

Since October, he’s gotten very comfortable learning to be a pet, and he loves meeting new friends, both human and canine. “He spends his days greeting customers at our dog bakery,” she said. He’s always smiling, and his tail is constantly wagging.

Apart from long walks and outdoor adventures, Bear’s other favorite activities include catching treats, getting belly rubs, and playing tug-of-war with his toys. Alexis also noted, “He really is a great dog and will make a great pet.  He would do awesome with an active person, maybe a hiker or a running partner.”

Bear Is Ready to Find His Forever Family

Bear is described as an affectionate pup who gets along great with people, dogs, and cats alike. While he loves kids, his rambunctious energy may be a bit too much for small children, so he’s seeking an active family with older children. Bear would thrive in a home with a large yard or access to open spaces where he can run and burn off his boundless energy.
