Not all dogs are lucky enough to start life on a beautiful note. Apple, a 2-year-old Chihuahua/Corgi Mix, is among these unlucky dogs.
For a long time, Apple’s world only revolved around darkness, scarcity, and confinement. Apple grew up in a trailer packed with 150 other dogs, a place where the warm morning sun rays and fresh air barely seeped through. Besides lacking enough space to stretch out her little legs without bumping into other paws, Apple’s everyday life in this trailer was marked by neglect and limited socialization with humans. Apple grew up knowing love is a concept that doesn’t exist. Nobody treated her with kindness and affection, and she, at some point, accepted that this is probably how life’s supposed to be. Only that she was wrong.
When Everything Changed
Eventually Apple, together with the other dogs, was rescued from the dark trailer. This miraculous rescue ushered Apple into a world that seemed unreal. She was so used to the sight of a rusty metal ceiling, so much so that seeing the blue sky stretched out above her felt unbelievable. Being outside the trailer also made Apple realize that the world was indeed big enough. Best of all, she experienced the touch of gentle hands and comforting voices, all thanks to her kind rescuers.
After her rescue, Apple was taken to the Great Plains SPCA shelter in Kansas City, where it didn’t take long for her to land a foster home.
The Beauty of Freedom
When Apple arrived in her foster home, she embraced her newfound reality with awe. Though everything around her seemed foreign at first — toys, a spacious yard filled with luscious grass, a soft bed, a full bowl, and a loving foster — Apple quickly discovered the joy of these simple pleasures.
Her everyday routine now includes exploring every inch of the yard with her foster siblings as she chases after butterflies with pure joy. We have to admit: seeing Apple run on grass at top speed is enough evidence of what happiness looks like for a soul that finally feels free.
Apple is having the time of her life in her foster home, and while here, she’s still learning to be a confident dog, especially towards people.
The reality, though, is that her life in a foster home is only temporary. Apple is searching for a forever family as early as now so that she doesn’t go back to the shelter when her time in foster care ends.
