What is an Australian Labradoodle?
An Australian Labradoodle isn’t just a Labradoodle born in Australia. A careful selection and mix of six different breeds of dog have brought the world the Australian Labradoodle. These breeds are:
- American Cocker Spaniel
- Cocker Spaniel
- Curly-Coated Retriever
- Irish Water Spaniel
- Labrador
- Poodle
Today, these pups are a few generations into their pedigree, meaning that many breeders are now trying to select specific traits. Some are even pushing to make the Australian Labradoodle its own recognized breed! The first true Australian Labradoodle was the result of careful research and breeding by Wally Conran, who ran an Australian guide dog company.
Appearance
The Australian Labradoodle looks like an adorable, curly-haired Labrador! Depending on their coloration, some even look a little bit like golden retrievers. These pups have floppy ears and long tails, and they’re adorable!
Height & Weight
There are three recognized sizes of Australian Labradoodle. The standard variety is 21–25 inches tall, and their healthy weight range falls between 50–65 pounds. For a slightly smaller companion, seek out a medium Australian labradoodle. These pups will be 17–20 inches tall and weigh in at 30–45 pounds.
What is a Mini Australian Labradoodle?
The third and final size for Australian Labradoodles is the miniature Australian Labradoodle. These cute little pups will only be 14–26 inches tall, and you can expect them to weigh 15–25 pounds. However, they maintain all of the same breed standards, and they’re the same as their larger relatives.
Temperament
Because of their background as service dogs, these pups make for amazing companion pooches! An Australian Labradoodle will be wise, gentle, loyal, and quick to learn new things. Their docile nature makes them a great pick for families with children.
However, potential pup parents should keep in mind that these dogs are rather active. Be ready to provide 30–60 minutes of daily activity and exercise to keep your best buddy happy!

Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles will share a few traits, as both pups have genes from labradors and poodles. However, overall, the Australian Labradoodle will be calmer than your standard Labradoodle.
Yes! The Australian Labradoodle’s fur is curly, which helps it catch and trap dander. As a result, the Australian labradoodle is a hypoallergenic breed.
Like all dogs, Australian Labradoodles are what we would consider colorblind. This doesn’t mean they see in black and white, though! They actually see in shades of yellow and green. So, what does that mean for our question of “are dogs color blind?” It means that they are by our standards, but they still see color!
Yes! Australian Labradoodles shed. In fact, you should plan on brushing their coats regularly.
The size of your pooch will depend on which of the three standards it falls into. Mini Aussie Labradoodles will max out at 15–20 pounds. However, medium pups of the same breed will be 30–45 pounds. The largest size, the standard Australian Labradoodle, will tip the scales at 50–65 pounds.
We’ve already mentioned the size standard for this breed, but it never hurts to double-check. A medium Australian Labradoodle will be 17–20 inches tall and weigh in at 30–45 pounds.
While these pups are hypoallergenic, they still shed! You’ll need to regularly brush your Australian Labradoodle. If you’re uncomfortable doing it yourself, you’ll also want to hire a groomer to trim their lovely coats 2–3 times every year.
Australian Labradoodles are a hardy breed. Larger pups can expect to live around 12 years, and smaller pups live an average of 14 years.
From a reputable breeder, you can expect to pay $2,700–$3,000 for an Australian Labradoodle pup!
Thanks to the efforts of Wally Conran, there are six breeds mixed into the Australian Labradoodle’s genetic makeup. In addition to the obvious Labrador and Poodle, Australian Labradoodle parentage includes bits from four other breeds:

-Irish Water Spaniel
Finding a true Australian Labradoodle in a shelter will be rare and difficult, but it’s not impossible. However, your best bet for getting your hands on an Australian labradoodle will be a reputable breeder.
