She Thought She Was Safe – Now Brandy is Back in a Kennel, Frozen in Fear

Brandy — an 11-month-old Shepherd Mix — was at a kill shelter in Texas awaiting to be euthanized when her silent prayer came true: Pawportunities Animal Rescue intervened, saving her from the brink of death.

While at the Missouri-based rescue, it didn’t take long before Brandy landed a foster home. This sweet-faced pup trotted out of the shelter in pure joy, knowing she’d finally catch a long break from the overwhelming shelter setting. Then, her worst nightmare happened; she was returned to the rescue after only a month of being in her foster home.

@pawportunities_rescue Brandy came from a high kill shelter in Texas, along with her two siblings Bandit and Haylie. Terrified upon arrival, she quickly went into a foster home where she was beginning to blossom (see video links in comments). Unfortunately after a month in the home, the foster doesn’t think she’s a good fit and she was returned back to the shelter. This is no fault of Brandy or the foster. We are grateful Brandy was able to spend a month outside of the shelter. We wanted people to see what happens when a dog enters the shelter- regardless the reason. Something we deal with every day. It’s heartbreaking and gut wrenching. All we want to do is hold each of them and tell them it’s going to be ok. But we can’t promise them a time when someone will step up and be their hero. Brandy could really use a hero right now. (So could her sister Haylie.) A foster or adopter, one that understands the trauma she comes with. That can be patient and encouraging, loving and compassionate. Help build her self confidence. Earn her trust. Love her so much she forgets her turmoiled past. Can you help us find her hero? This sudden switch of events threw Brandy into a state of fear and shock, as evident from her reaction when she realized she was back in the very place she dreaded (watch the video below).

From Hopeful to Broken

The rescue recently released a TikTok video capturing Brandy’s heartbreaking reaction. The clip shows poor Brandy pancaked to the floor, refusing to walk to her kennel. A staff member tries to gently reassure her but Brandy still refuses to get up from the floor and even urinates out of fear. The staff member opts to carry Brandy briefly before putting her down and leading her to her kennel.

A leashed Brandy is seen crouching to the ground as she walks reluctantly, looking for a way to escape. Once inside her kennel, she’s observed trying to make herself invisible by hiding at the back, terrified of everything around her. It’s obvious that this once-hopeful pup is now drowning in fear and helplessness, and it’s soul-crashing, to say the least.

“We want people to see what happens when a dog enters the shelter — regardless of the reason….all we want to do is hold each of them and tell them it’s going to be okay,” the shelter captioned in the tear-jerking video.

Brandy’s Counting on You for Her Happy Ending

It’s hard for staff to watch Brandy locked in her kennel with a constant look of defeat in her eyes. This gorgeous girl will give anything to be out of the shelter for good, and only you can make that happen. Truth is, Brandy is having a really difficult time coping with her new reality, and it could get worse the longer she stays here.

Brandy would make an amazing addition to a family that’s not too busy for her. She just wants to be part of a loving home that will patiently help her blossom into a confident dog. Could this be you? If you’d love to offer Brandy a home, please visit Pawportunities Animal Rescue’s website for details on her adoption.
