This is a dog bed hack that has saved us hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the past year alone. I have had dogs my whole life, but it wasn’t until I had a baby that I started thinking about how there had to be a better solution for dogs who soiled their bed, ie Kobe from his heart medications and the numerous foster dogs we’ve had over the years.
Most baby mattresses are waterproof for obvious reasons. And it seems so odd to me that dog beds aren’t the same. You all know once a dog pees on an orthopedic foam bed, that $100+ bed is now toast.
Enter the Newton Dog Bed – these beds are actually made by a baby mattress company from the same technology as their baby mattresses. The best part is they are 100% washable from their cover to the inner mattress core.
Now here’s the hack
While these dog beds are great for having around the house, I really needed one to be the exact size of Kobe’s crate. (If you read my last article you know the majority of my pups all sleep in their own crate)
I have not thrown away a bed since starting this
So I purchased their baby crib mattress, then I cut off about 10 inches of the inner core so it fit Kobe’s crate perfectly. I threw on an old dog bed cover and voila! It may seem like a hefty price tag upfront, but I literally have not thrown away a dog bed since doing this and in my opinion is well worth it because of the money I have saved.
Here’s how you cut the mattress
A standard crib mattress is 52 x 28 inches and Kobe’s crate size is 42 x 28 inches. So I used a tape measure, marked where I wanted to cut with a sharpie and used scissors to cut along the sharpie line. The mattress is about 4 inches thick, but the material is a woven food grade polymer so scissors cut it with ease.
Any time Kobe has an accident, we take the inner core outside to hose it down, spray some natural cleaner on it, hose it down again and let it air dry. The cover we throw in the wash and bam we are good to go! Before we were spending about $100 on a new bed every time he peed on it, which got out of control.
The gray bed on the right is Capri’s baby mattress. The white bed on the left is the inner core of that same kind of mattress that I cut down to fit Kobe’s crate, just add an old dog bed cover!
