We found her Wrapped in Duct Tape… then we Looked Underneath 😳

I’ve seen a lot of things walking into shelters over the years. Fear. Confusion. Dogs who just shut down completely.

But when I met this big black dog, something felt different right away.

She’d been dropped in the night drop box in the middle of the night. The couple who left her claimed they’d “found her as a stray.” They even wrote down fake names on the paperwork. But the security footage told a very different story.

They carried her in.

Not because she was sleepy. Because she could barely walk.

And when the shelter team removed the sweater she was wearing the next morning, they discovered why.

Under layers of duct tape and old, filthy T-shirts was a massive open wound on her side. It was so severe we couldn’t even show it on camera.

Whoever left her there didn’t just abandon her.

They tried to hide what had happened to her.

Sitting With Her for the First Time

When I sat down beside her kennel, she looked up at me with these big, tired eyes.

“Hey, big girl,” I told her softly.

She didn’t growl. She didn’t bark. She just leaned toward me like a baby looking for comfort.

I gave her a treat. She took it gently.

That’s always the moment I pay attention to. A dog can be in terrible pain, terrified, confused, and still choose trust.

And she did.

But the reality was hard to ignore. Dogs don’t usually survive wounds like the one she had. Infection, cancer, complications. The odds weren’t great.

So I had to make a decision quickly.

Do we try to save her?

And if we do… can we even afford it?

Rallying the Community

Her original name on the paperwork was Celia.

But when I said it to her, she didn’t react at all. Nothing. No flick of the ear, no glance.

So I made a call I’ve made before in situations like this.

We gave the internet the chance to name her.

If this community was going to help save her life, they deserved to be part of her new beginning too.

Thousands of suggestions poured in, and eventually one name stood out above all the others.

Olive.

A fresh name for a fresh start.

The Emergency Surgery

To give Olive a fighting chance, she needed major surgery.

That meant calling in help.

The incredible team at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, led by Dr. Mays, stepped in and agreed to take her case. But this wasn’t a simple procedure. So much skin was missing that the surgical team needed several days just to figure out the safest way to close the wound.

While they prepared, Olive stayed under close medical care.

Every bandage change was painful. The team used cream cheese and treats just to distract her while they worked.

Even through all of it, she stayed sweet.

Finally, surgery day came.

And then we waited.

Those are the moments rescue people know well. The hours where your brain runs through every worst-case scenario imaginable.

But then the call came.

The surgery worked.

Olive was going to make it.

Healing at Flip’s Farm

Once Olive was stable, she came to Flip’s Farm to recover.

Now if you’ve seen the farm before, you know it’s not a typical place. Dogs get space to breathe. Grass under their paws. Quiet. Birds. Fresh air. Time.

Olive needed all of that.

At first she moved slowly, taking in everything around her. Even simple things like stairs were brand new to her.

She had her own little recovery space inside the Quonset hut while her stitches healed. No running yet. No wild zoomies.

But little by little, her personality started to show.

And one day it clicked.

It was raining.

Instead of hiding, Olive started bouncing through puddles like a puppy who had just discovered the greatest toy in the world.

That was the moment I knew.

She was ready for a real home.

A Family Steps Forward

Adoption applications started coming in.

One family stood out.

Cassandra and John had already visited Rancho Coastal Humane Society before looking for a dog, so the team knew them well. And when they met Olive during the meet-and-greet, something just… worked.

Olive approached them gently.

Curious. Careful. Hopeful.

They said yes.

And just like that, the dog who had once been dragged into a night drop box was riding home with her new family.

Learning How to Be a Dog

The transition wasn’t perfect at first.

Cassandra told us Olive didn’t even understand treats or toys when she arrived home. She had no idea how to play.

And sometimes she would “pancake,” dropping to the ground in fear.

But Cassandra and John did the one thing every rescue dog needs most.

They were patient.

They hugged her. Encouraged her. Played with her. Let her learn life at her own pace.

Now?

Olive is a toy-destroying machine with a backyard to run in and a best dog friend named Sasha. She loves car rides and pup cups and sleeping next to her mom.

That scar on her side will always be there.

But the fear behind her eyes is gone.

What Kind of Dog Is Olive?

People constantly asked what breed she was.

Some guessed Labrador. Others guessed Great Dane.

After talking with the vet, the best guess?

A Labrador–Great Dane mix.

Which explains the big frame, the goofy personality, and the gentle nature she showed even when she was hurting.

Both breeds are known for their affectionate, people-loving temperament. Labradors are eager to please and highly trainable, while Great Danes are famously gentle giants.

That combination makes Olive a wonderful candidate for what comes next.

Olive’s Next Chapter

Cassandra and John have started working with a trainer to help Olive become something pretty incredible.

A therapy or service dog who can visit children in hospitals.

Think about that for a moment.

A dog who once suffered unimaginable pain may soon help comfort kids going through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Rescue stories come full circle sometimes.

And this one feels pretty special.

Leaving the Past Behind

I kept that filthy T-shirt that had been wrapped around her wound the night she was abandoned.

Duct tape and all.

Not because I wanted to remember the cruelty.

Because I wanted the chance to throw it away once she made it.

And when Olive finally found her forever family, I cut it up and tossed it in the trash.

Her old life ended there.
