One Eye, Full Heart: A Boxer’s Inspiring Journey From Stray to Survivor

On a brisk October morning, a brown-and-white boxer mix was brought into the care of the Footbridge Foundation, a local animal rescue group. This scrappy young pup had clearly been through the wringer – he was underweight, his fur matted, and one of his eyes was badly damaged from a recent trauma. The staffers at Footbridge aptly named him Tater, hoping this friendly dog would get a fresh start.

Forced into Dog Fighting

Tater had been found as a stray before being taken in by animal control. At some point in his short life, he had been forced into dog fighting, resulting in the severe injury to his eye. “We don’t know much about his hardships other than he somehow found his way on the street and was found underweight and malnourished,” said Lauren Walcher, Events & Fundraising Coordinator at Footbridge Foundation.

Overcoming Adversity

After just a week in Footbridge’s care, Tater underwent surgery to remove his damaged eye. Though this left him with some visual limitations, Tater has adjusted remarkably well. “He has overcome so much adversity and he doesn’t let it hold him back,” Walcher said. “He has a zest for life and loves to play with all of his toys at once – it’s sure to make you giggle!”

These days, Tater spends his time romping at the dog park, lounging on the couch, and looking at himself in the mirror. While he barks at adoption events, likely due to overstimulation, he is very well-behaved and affectionate in his foster home.

Zoomies & Cuddles

“This young, active pup likes to get the zoomies and go on walks, but he’s also down to just cuddle and chill,” Walcher said. “He is going to love spending time with you no matter what you’re doing.” She notes that Tater has excelled at potty training and, though he needs some encouragement with crate training, he is highly motivated by treats and praise.

Tater’s foster family and the staff at Footbridge are confident this affectionate boxer mix will make a loyal, loving pet. Though he endured early hardships, Tater has proven he is ready and willing to put his traumatic past behind him. With the right family, this brave pup is sure to thrive.
