Receiving a dog or puppy for Christmas or on a birthday is a dream many children (and adults) share, but it’s important not to treat dogs or other animals as objects to be bought, gifted and returned at will. When you adopt or buy a dog, you should be committed for that dog’s entire lifetime, and everyone in the household with the dog should be on board with dog ownership. Never buy or adopt a dog for someone else without permission, and never choose a dog as an impulsive gift.
Unfortunately, some shelters see an uptick in surrenders and adopted dog returns after the holidays, usually from owners who didn’t adequately prepare logistically or emotionally for dog ownership. Holidays and birthdays can be magical when a dog is involved, but that magic can turn into stress without the right preparation.
