Bald & Beautiful: 10 Hairless Dog Breeds You Probably Never Knew Existed

Everyone has their own version of their ideal canine companion as far as looks are concerned. For some, it’s an oh-so-fluffy dog that will unleash their love for snuggling. For others (read: allergen sufferers), it’s a sleek-looking dog with minimal to no hair. If you’re fascinated by the thought of a (completely) hairless dog breed that’ll make your life easier as an allergen sufferer, then this article is for you.

Findings show that hairless dog breeds possess an inherited hairless gene variant known as FOX13 that contributes to their lack of hair. Although most of these dogs aren’t as popular as their haired counterparts, they do make incredible family pets. So, if you’re contemplating getting a hairless dog (which, by the way, may not be that easy, as a majority of these dogs are rare in the U.S.), keep in mind that these bald pups may require a little more TLC during both hot and cold days.

Since hair plays an important role in protecting dogs from direct heat, hairless dog breeds are at an increased risk of sunburns, particularly during hot weather. For this reason, dog sunscreen is highly recommended for a dog with no hair who spends a lot of time outdoors. During cold weather, these hairless dogs need to be kept warmer because they lack a thick, insulating coat of fur.

With that in mind, here are 10 pictures of hairless dog breeds that you’ll instantly fall in love with:
