When investigators from the Arizona Humane Society arrived, they were heartbroken but determined to save her. What started as a scene of unimaginable cruelty quickly turned into a story of hope, healing, and a happy ending for a pup who refused to give up.
A Puppy on the Brink of Death in the Arizona Heat

When investigators from the shelter arrived at the scene, they were met with a concerning sight. Six-month-old Claire was lying motionless inside her crate, suffering from severe heat distress after being left outside since early morning. Her small body had reached an internal temperature of 109 degrees, far beyond what most animals could survive.
Field operations supervisor Julie Bolchalk and emergency animal medical technician Lacey VanDeLaare quickly rushed into action, knowing every second mattered.
VanDeLaare later shared that most dogs begin experiencing seizures and organ failure at around 104 degrees, making Claire’s survival nothing short of miraculous. Despite the odds stacked against her, this little puppy was still fighting, making her rescuers even more determined to save her.
Severe Burns, Open Wounds, and a Puppy’s Will to Survive

The rescue team immediately began cooling Claire’s body, doing everything they could to bring her temperature down before rushing her to the Arizona Humane Society’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital. There, veterinarians worked tirelessly to stabilize her fragile condition.
But just when they thought she was on the mend, the team made a shocking discovery. A few days into her recovery, they noticed bubbling beneath her fur, a sign of severe burns hidden beneath the surface. The heat had been so intense that it caused open wounds, leaving Claire at serious risk of infection.
Determined to ease her pain and help her heal, the medical staff treated her with antibiotics, pain medication, honey bandages, and gentle light laser therapy. It was a slow and delicate process, but through it all, Claire continued to fight, proving she had the heart of a survivor.
A Second Chance and a Forever Family

For two months, Claire remained under the careful watch of the Arizona Humane Society’s medical team, receiving daily wound cleanings and round-the-clock care. Slowly but surely, her tiny body began to heal. Once she was strong enough, Claire moved into the loving home of foster mom Mary Buckley, where she continued her recovery surrounded by comfort, care, and affection.
Not long after, the brave little pup found her forever home with a new family, and even gained a furry sibling to play with. Her rescuers say seeing her thrive is nothing short of a miracle. “I can’t believe she survived all that she has,” shared investigator Julie Bolchalk, filled with gratitude and awe.
Meanwhile, justice is being served. Claire’s former owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. After discovering the extent of her burns, the shelter worked closely with authorities to ensure felony charges were pursued, a small but vital step toward protecting other pets like Claire.
