Dumped in a Shelter to Die, This Hospice Dog Got a Second Chance at Love
It’s a scene that plays out in shelters more times than we can count: older dogs being passed over in favor of puppies and young adult dogs. It’s even worse for hospice dogs, as they’re often perceived as pets who have nothing left to offer. But wait until you meet Endora, a brindle-coated hospice Pit Bull who’s proven to the internet that hospice dogs can also bring joy to a home if given a chance.
@allthefosterpups Endora was adopted back in November but I recently received updates from her new mama to complete her story. Endora’s journey is one of transformation and love. Coming from an overcrowded shelter, she proved that even dogs with the toughest challenges deserve a chance. She quickly became a part of our family, showing us just how much life she still had to give. Now, in her forever home with Carole, she’s surrounded by the care and comfort she always deserved. Dumped at an overcrowded shelter in California, Endora was destined for the kind of fate that no hospice dog wishes: living out their final days in utter sadness and solitude while facing the possibility of euthanasia. Thankfully, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue heard of Endora’s plight and intervened with one goal in mind: to ensure this special Pit Bull experiences true happiness even as she approaches the end of life.
From Hopeless to Thriving
Lisa — an avid senior dog lover who regularly fosters senior & hospice pups through Mutville Senior Dog Rescue — was instantly drawn to Endora, prompting her to open her home to this lovely hospice pup.
From the moment Endora arrived in her foster home, her confidence and vibrant personality stood out. She not only hit it off immediately with her foster siblings but also explored her surroundings with so much vigor, her mobility issues notwithstanding. Her playfulness, big smiles, and overall zest for life added warmth to Lisa’s home. Endora was a completely different dog from the broken pup she was while at the overcrowded shelter.
“Her determination was nothing short of inspiring, a reminder of how much strength can live in a soul that refuses to give up,” Lisa shared.
Another Win for Endora
Luck knocked on Endora’s door once again when a kind woman offered to give her a permanent home. Adopted last year in November, Endora is still going strong. She’s now part of a family that adores her to bits and is getting all the attention she needs to lead a comfortable, happy life for the remaining time she has left.
Seeing Endora run around with her siblings in the yard with her tail wagging in all directions will for a moment make you question whether she’s indeed a hospice pup. She’s having the time of her life in her new home, and her owner wouldn’t have it any other way. Although it’s uncertain how much time Endora has left, one’s things for sure: she knows what it feels like to be loved and wanted, as old as she is.
“Hospice dogs, just like every other dog, can be a source of pure happiness to anyone who takes a chance on them. Endora is where she is today because someone chose to see beyond her hospice status and considered her worthy of love,” pet rescue Rocky Kanaka says.
