Gorgeous Puppy ‘Who Wouldn’t Hurt a Fly’ Dumped on Busy Intersection, Looking for Forever Home

Every day, countless shelters across the U.S. take in dogs dumped by their owners, and it’s hard to digest the reality that dog dumping has become a frequent occurrence. Among these innocent dogs who found themselves at the shelter after being dumped by the person they considered their forever human is Cerby, an approximately one-year-old Pit Bull-Mastiff mix with the most gorgeous brindle coat ever

In July 2024, Cerby was let down by the very same person who initially swore to protect him. His owner chose to dump him on a busy intersection as though his life didn’t matter. While it’s unclear why they did this, dumping a dog — no matter how overwhelming pet ownership may turn out to be — is purely unfair.

Cerby’s owner had the option of surrendering him to the shelter, but they instead opted to dump him and leave him at the mercy of fate. Fortunately, a kind-hearted lady who witnessed the whole ordeal managed to get a hold of Cerby before a speeding vehicle knocked him down.

A Fresh Start

Since Cerby’s human savior didn’t have the capacity to care for him, she shared news about him on Facebook, hoping someone out there would step in and assist. Luckily, her efforts bore fruit, as her Facebook post captured the attention of Emily Demos, who works with the Jacksonville Humane Society.

Emily — or Em, as she prefers to be called — volunteered to take in Cerby on a home stray hold arrangement. After a couple of days with Em, Cerby started life as a shelter dog at Jacksonville Humane Society, where he currently is. According to Em, Cerby is having a hard time adjusting to the kennel environment, which only shows that his greatest desire is to be in a loving permanent home, not confined in an overwhelming space.

“He is scared of the kennel in some ways; it is difficult to get him in one,” explains Em. “Our assumption is he was locked in one for incredibly long periods by his last owner (the dumper), he will cry, but eventually he will settle down.”

Despite his incredible qualities, Poor Cerby often faces stigma because of his breed. “Unfortunately, the people I ask don’t want a big Mastiff-Pit mix because of the stigma around them,” Em told us.

The truth is, those who overlook Cerby miss out on discovering how awesome he is. While Cerby has every reason not to trust humans again after the betrayal he faced from his owner, his heart is still open to loving hard once again.

Cerby Craves a Forever Family — Could That Be You?

Em describes Cerby as the sweetest, too-loveable boy who loves everyone and “wouldn’t hurt a fly.” All Cerby wants is to love, be loved right back, and shower his favorite human with kisses each day, nothing more. His playfulness and love for snuggling will constantly leave you smiling from ear to ear, and you’ll never want to imagine life without him.

In addition to his love for people, sweet Cerby also loves being around other dogs and cats (though he’s super curious about felines and can get a bit rough with them). And did we mention his taste buds have a soft spot for tater tots? He’d sell you out for a pack of these goodies!

Cerby is already familiar with basic commands, so his smartness and good manners will leave you impressed. If you’d love to give this good boy the forever home he deserves, please contact the Jacksonville Humane Society for details on his adoption process.
