Deadly Threat Lurking in Dog’s Coat – How This Rescue Saved Her Life
When I first laid eyes on Osa, a majestic Chow Chow, I was shocked. This breed, known for its loyalty and rich history dating back over 8,000 years, was now rare, and Osa’s condition made it clear why that might be. She had been spotted running the streets alone for at least five days, dodging the efforts of animal control before they finally managed to bring her to safety. But her time on the streets wasn’t the most shocking part—her condition told a much longer, sadder story.
Mel’s Challenge: Unraveling the Mats
When Mel, our shelter groomer, started examining Osa, it was clear that her fur was in terrible shape. “Oh yeah, she’s very matted down,” Mel pointed out as she worked. “There’s a bunch right in this area. She’s even got them in between her toes. This is sort of a nightmare.” It wasn’t just the five days on the streets that had done this; Osa’s fur told a tale of months, maybe even years, of neglect.

As Mel continued, she and Cheryl discovered a far more dangerous problem—Osa’s coat was full of foxtails. These sharp, barbed seeds can work their way into a dog’s skin, causing infections and serious internal issues. “She has a tremendous amount of them,” I remember Mel saying, her voice full of concern. The team knew they had to take their time, meticulously removing every single foxtail. It was a painstaking process, and Osa, despite being just one year old, was incredibly patient throughout. But we weren’t out of the woods yet.

After the foxtails were finally removed, it was time to move Osa into the bath for a lavender shampoo and conditioner treatment. The soothing scent filled the room, and you could almost see the relief wash over Osa as Mel gently massaged the soap into her matted fur. “Somebody’s going to want her,” Mel said with hope in her voice. “There are people out there that just love this breed.”
Next came the Happy Hoodie—a soft, comforting wrap that helps reduce the noise and stress of the dryer. Osa was understandably nervous, but she trusted us, and that trust made all the difference. As the dryer hummed, we watched her transform from a neglected stray to a beautiful, fluffy Chow Chow, her coat shining and her eyes bright.

When it was all done, Osa looked like a brand-new dog. The transformation was incredible, and it was clear that she deserved a name that reflected her new start. We chose “Osa,” the female version of “Bear” in Spanish, because she truly looked like a cuddly teddy bear.

As I watched her, I couldn’t help but feel proud of our team and hopeful for Osa’s future. Now, we just need to find her the loving home she deserves.
