After a tough start to life, Caramela—affectionately called Cara—is finally getting a second chance. This 16-month-old, 13-pound red smooth-coated Dachshund made her way from Alabama to a foster home in Marinette, Wisconsin, after her former family could no longer care for her due to work obligations. Shy at first, Cara has slowly blossomed into a playful, affectionate, and trusting pup who’s now ready for her forever home.

Cara may be small, but her heart is big. Once unsure and nervous, she’s now thriving thanks to the kindness and patience of her foster family. She loves romping around with the other young dogs in the home and has proven to be well-mannered and adaptable. She’s crate trained, leash trained, and fully housetrained when kept on a schedule or provided with a doggie door.

Her fosters say she’s done great when left out of the crate with her dog companions, and she finds confidence in having a canine buddy nearby. Because of her sensitive nature, she’ll do best in a home that goes slow with introductions and gives her the time and space she needs to feel safe.

Cara is especially fond of kids—as long as they’re gentle and respectful of her space. While she hasn’t lived with cats, her fosters think it’s unlikely she’d be a good match for a feline home due to her natural curiosity. And while she’s quiet and calm most of the time, apartment or condo life isn’t the right fit, as she may bark at unfamiliar noises.

What Cara Needs in a Home:

Cara’s ideal family is one that’s around more often than not—whether that’s someone who works from home or is simply homebody-inclined. She’ll need a fenced yard to explore safely, another small, young dog to bond with, and someone who’s active enough to take her on walks or car rides (two things she’s learning to enjoy).

Most importantly, she needs love, consistency, and a bit of patience to let her continue building trust at her own pace.

Cara is fully vetted, spayed, vaccinated (DHPP and rabies), and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $475, plus a $25 microchip fee. Out-of-state adopters will need to cover a $60 health certificate, and adoptions are not permitted to CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to state regulations.

If you’re looking for a sweet, soulful pup to add to your pack, Cara may be the perfect fit. She’s already come a long way—and now, she just needs a home to call her own.
