Senior Husky Dumped at Shelter By Family for ‘Having Allergies’ Ready to Love Again
Each year, roughly 3.1 million dogs enter various shelters across the United States, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This figure often represents dogs brought in as strays, lost pets, and those taken in as owner surrenders.
Being brought to a shelter can be a relief for dogs rescued from street hardship, but it’s often heartbreaking for dogs surrendered by their families. Every dog dreams of a loving home, so when a family dog finds itself in a shelter, it’s no wonder their hearts break.

Now add the fact that you’re going to die simply because you’re in that shelter and no one seems to want you. That was Kira’s life and the life of so many other dogs lingering in shelters nationwide. Through no fault of their own they are rejected by the people they’ve devoted themselves to. Thrown out like a piece of broken furniture and then killed for space because there are so many just like them and not enough people giving these poor souls homes. Among these heartbroken souls is Kira, a lovely 8-year-old Siberian Husky who was recently surrendered to the shelter on claims that she has allergies. Shockingly, Kira’s coat had been dyed pink when she was brought to the shelter.
The Pain of Surrender
Kira’s arrival at the shelter came with an added risk: euthanasia. Despite how amazing she is, Kira was struggling to win the hearts of potential adopters, a challenge that saw her listed for euthanasia. As Pet Rescue Advocate Rocky Kanaka explains, “Animal shelters do everything they can to provide a safe refuge for any pup who ends up at their door. However, as shelters become overcrowded and potential adopters become more scarce, most shelters have no choice but to euthanize to make more room for incoming dogs.”
Thankfully, Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue intervened and took in Kira, saving her from euthanasia. The rescue learned that prior to her surrender, Kira had lived with her previous family for seven good years.
Staff at the rescue have reasons to believe that there’s more to Kira’s surrender than the allergy allegations. It’s heartbreaking to imagine that sweet Kira was let down by the people she trusted the most. Luckily, she’s found a community of staff that show her love and assure her of her worth each day, gestures she appreciates with every tail wag.
“Seeing a senior dog like Kira, who has given so much love and loyalty to her family, end up in a shelter dyed pink and facing euthanasia is truly heartbreaking,” said Rocky Kanaka, pet rescue advocate. “Dogs like Kira deserve our compassion and a second chance at a loving home.”
In spite of all she’s been through, Kira is ready to open her heart to love unconditionally once again. She only has one favor to ask of her soon-to-be family: that they never give up on her like her previous family did.

The rescue describes Kira as an ever-happy, easy-going, and well-behaved dog who loves being around humans and other dogs (yes people, she’s dog-friendly!). Kira is such a good girl that the rescue is finding it hard to understand why her previous family didn’t treasure her as she deserves.
