Destroying 3 Myths About Dog Adoption
Watching these deserving shelter dogs finally get their forever homes might have your heart convinced to adopt, but your brain might still have a few questions. Getting a dog is always a big decision and comes with a host of responsibilities, but there are some myths about adopting a dog that deter many people from even visiting a shelter. If you’re nervous about adopting a dog and are leaning towards buying from a breeder, let us dispel a few common myths about dog adoption before you make your final decision.

Myth #1: Shelters Only Have Mutts
Fact: 25% of shelter dogs are purebred. You don’t have to buy a dog from a breeder to get the breed of your dreams—there are plenty of purebreds at the shelter!
With the rise of designer dogs (purposefully bred mixed-breed dogs like Labradoodles), there are also more “desirable” mixed-breed dogs in shelters, including Poodle mixes, Chihuahua mixes, Lab mixes, and many more.
Myth #2: You Have To Go To a Breeder To Get a Puppy
Fact: Shelters frequently have puppies, but they get adopted more quickly than adult dogs. You can easily find puppies in every age range at shelters, humane societies, and animal rescues. Breed-specific rescues are also a good resource for finding specific breeds of puppies available for adoption.

Myth #3: Adopted Dogs Are Less Predictable Than Breeder Dogs
Fact: No dog is 100% predictable! Ethical breeders work hard to choose compatible genetic and personality pairings, but no dog’s temperament is entirely predictable. While some dogs in shelters have had painful pasts, trauma does not automatically make a dog unpredictable or unsafe. Learning about canine body language, positive reinforcement training, and animal behavior are key skills for understanding any dog, not just dogs from the shelter.
