Barney Heads For The Shelter On Foot—Rescuers Follow
As the team prepared to set traps for Barney the next morning, they were stunned to learn he had traveled miles overnight and was now close to the shelter where Nutmeg was being cared for. Likely driven by a desperate need to reunite with his daughter, Barney was spotted on security and trail cameras but repeatedly evaded capture.
For four long days, volunteers tried every trick in the book to catch him, but Barney stayed just out of reach. Exhausted and in worsening condition, the determined dog seemed to be running out of time.

A Blanket Brings Barney Home
On the fifth day, rescuers set up one final trap near Barney’s last known location, relying on instinct rather than a confirmed sighting. To lure him in, they added a blanket that Nutmeg had been using at the shelter. Hours later, their cameras alerted them to movement: Barney was in the trap, sitting on his daughter’s blanket.
A Joyful Reunion
Back at the shelter, Barney and Nutmeg’s reunion was nothing short of magical. For the first time all week, Nutmeg perked up, jumping around like a playful puppy and showering Barney with kisses. Despite his exhaustion, Barney stayed still, allowing her to smother him with affection.
