This Puppy’s Legs Were So Deformed She Could Only Crawl—Now She’s Running Free

Ayla was just a tiny puppy when rescuers found her in December 2024, and the sight of her broke their hearts. At only 2.5 months old, she was covered in mange, frail, and clearly unwell. But what stood out most wasn’t her fragile body; it was the way she moved. (Watch Video Below)

@littlestepsmatter.bali Ayla's miraculous transformation " Only beginning of December we rescued Ayla from a heart wrenching scene. Aside from being covered in mange and in very poor general health, we found out that she had no broken bones, but deformity of both her front legs caused by lack of calcium and nutrition. Ayla had no choice but to crawl along the ground, which would have created further abrasion and injury to herself as time went on. We had seen cases like this before, but never as severe as in Ayla. She was only 2.5 months but has been living in this discomfort for most of her young life. The feebly way she was crawling on the hard concrete and trying to lick away the pain was truly tearing our hearts out. Thankfully she was surrendered into our care and with the right medical attention and lots of love from us in our Safe House, soon after she made a recovery that never stops to amaze us. Ayla then tound her torever tamily in Jonathan ana Daniel. They tell head over heals in love with her as soon as they met. She now lives a happy life that she deserved all along. Our hearts couldn't be more full. Leave a ♥️ for Ayla if you believe like us, that love is and always will be the answer. With both front legs deformed from severe calcium and nutrient deficiency, Ayla couldn’t walk like other puppies. Instead, she painfully dragged herself forward on her elbows, trying her best to keep up with a world that had already been so cruel to her.

The Painful Walk

Because of a severe lack of proper nutrients, little Ayla couldn’t walk like a normal puppy, she had to crawl. Every movement meant dragging her tiny body across rough ground, causing pain, discomfort, and likely more injury with each passing day.

When the team from Little Steps Matter Bali saw her struggling on the hard concrete, licking her sore legs as if trying to soothe herself, their hearts broke. They knew they had to act.

The rescue team convinced her owner to surrender her, giving Ayla the chance she so desperately needed. That moment marked the start of a new chapter, one filled with hope, healing, and love.

Healing and Love In Store For The Puppy

Once Ayla was at the rescue, she finally got the medical attention and lots of love she desperately needed. As a result, she made an incredible recovery and transformed into a healthy, happy, and playful pupper.

Soon, she found her happily ever after with two people: Jonathan and Daniel, who fell completely in love with her.

Now, Ayla is living her dream life with parents who dote on her in a safe and comfortable home. She finally gets to be spoiled just like any other puppy.

Ayla’s amazing journey left a lasting impression on not only her new dads but also on the TikTok community. Her story on the rescue’s TikTok reached over 23K views and 8K likes, spreading hope one wag at a time.

Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka summed up her journey beautifully: “Ayla didn’t just survive, she thrived. Watching her go from crawling on concrete to playing without pain is nothing short of incredible.”

Calcium Deficiency in Dogs

Ayla’s calcium deficiency made her unable to walk normally. So, let’s understand what it means for a dog to have low calcium levels.

Hypocalcemia means your dog has low calcium levels in their blood—a condition that can lead to weakness, muscle twitching, or even seizures, as stated by veterinarians at VCA animal hospitals. Calcium is vital for things like muscle function, nerve signals, and bone health. Low levels can result from poor nutrition, kidney or parathyroid issues, or even intense nursing in mother dogs.

Symptoms range from subtle to serious, so vets often confirm diagnosis through blood tests—especially ionized calcium testing.

Treatment depends on the cause, but may include calcium supplements, vitamin D, or IV support in emergencies. Always consult your vet if your dog shows signs of weakness or unusual behavior.

Calcium Supplements For Dogs

calcium supplement for dogs helps treat or prevent low calcium levels (hypocalcemia), often using forms like citrate, carbonate, or gluconate, according to veterinarian Dr. Rania Gollakner. While good quality commercial food for dogs usually meets daily needs, supplements may be needed for pets on homemade diets or for pregnant or nursing dogs.

Calcium pills for dogs should only be used under a vet’s supervision, as too much can lead to high calcium in dogs, which causes serious issues like bladder stones or tissue hardening.

If your dog has elevated calcium levels, your vet may recommend further testing. Always follow dosing instructions and never double up if you miss a dose.
