This Dog’s Owner Passed Away Months Ago — He Won’t Stop Wishing for a New Best Friend

Nickel, a 3-year-old mixed breed at the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach, has been waiting for a forever home since March 2024. He arrived at the shelter after the death of his owner, bringing the stable life he had ever known to an abrupt halt. Nearly a year later, Nickel’s greatest wish of starting afresh in a loving forever home has yet to come true.

Winning a Major Health Battle

Besides having to face the heartbreaking reality of never seeing his owner again, Nickel’s health also went south shortly after he came to the shelter.

This 64-pound sweetheart tested positive for heartworm disease, making his situation even more saddening. Thankfully, the shelter ensured he received the best treatment to make a full recovery — and he did. Even though Nickel is now in a healthy state, his happiness isn’t complete because he has no family to call his own.

Being a reserved pup, Nickel is often observed sitting quietly in his kennel with the hopes that the right pair of eyes will notice him and give him a home. His unfortunate brush with the shelter life is a solid reminder of the importance of having a succession plan as a dog owner

“One of the most overlooked reasons for pets, especially dogs, becoming homeless is the death or incapacitation of their owners. A succession plan is an excellent way to look out for our pets’ futures, ensuring they are cared for even when we are no longer around to do so,” explains pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka.

Could You Give Nickel A Fresh Start?

Nickel simply wants to get back to the life he once knew: a happy life in a real home. At only three years old, Nickel is in his prime years, meaning he should be out there making the most out of life, not languishing in a lonely kennel.

He’s an affectionate pup who’s ready to give his whole heart to the person who’ll promise him forever. Nickel exhibits a calm demeanor, and while he may not unleash his sweet, easy-going side to strangers right away, he won’t want to leave your side once he gets to know you. Talk of a gentleman who likes to take things slow!

Nickel isn’t selective about the people he wants to spend quality time with — he loves making new friends. The quickest way to make him flash an ear-to-ear smile is by taking him on a walk or letting him play in the yard. Oh, and nothing feels like heaven to Nickel more than sunbathing in the sun!
