This Dog Has Spent 3 Years in a Shelter Without a Single Interested Adopter—Why Doesn’t Anyone Want Captain?
Imagine all the things you’ve accomplished in your life since 2022. Your list is pretty long, isn’t it? Well, count yourself lucky because for 5-year-old Captain, life since 2022 has been stagnant.
@hsnaples This 5-year-old sweetheart has been one of our longest residents, waiting patiently since 2022 without a break from the shelter stress. Day after day, he continues to be overlooked—despite being a staff favorite with a heart full of love. 💙 Captain has never known the comfort of a foster home, but he remains hopeful. He’s low-maintenance, incredibly loving, and always eager to make new friends. Sadly, he’s growing older in the shelter, and we would love nothing more than to see him finally experience the warmth of a home. Captain is famous for his boundless love of play, especially his signature game: 2-ball-catch. It’s simple—toss one ball, and when he brings it back, toss another. He thrives on the fun of chasing without having to share his toys. Watching him zoom around the yard, full of pure joy, is guaranteed to brighten anyone's day. 🐾🎾 Because of his protective nature over his toys, Captain would do best in a home without young children or with older kids who can respect his space. He’s a fantastic pup who just needs the right environment to flourish. If you’re ready to give Captain the chance he deserves—whether as a foster or forever home—please reach out to [email protected] or call our Main Shelter. You can also stop by in person to meet this lovable goofball. Let’s help Captain finally find his happily ever after! 🐾❤️ #animalshelter #dog #longtermresident #rescuedog #shelterdog #adoptme #dogvideos #reels #pittiesoftiktok #pitbull #pitties #pittielove #helpme #dog #dogsoftiktok#share #foryou #florida #doglover #mutt #dogrescue #adoptme ♬ original sound – Humane Society Naples
Captain is currently one of the longest residents at the Humane Society Naples. He arrived here in 2022, and three years later, he’s still waiting for someone to give him his happy ending. The saddest part about Captain’s prolonged wait is that he’s never had a break from the stressful kennel life. Since coming to the shelter, Captain hasn’t been to any foster home, let alone an adoptive forever home.
It’s not that he isn’t a good boy — he is the best. It’s not that he isn’t loveable — he is an absolute darling. It’s not that he isn’t friendly — his greatest strength is making new friends with ease. It’s simply because people unfairly pass him by. Captain has never seen a visitor stopping by his kennel and making an effort to bond with him. All they do is simply glance at him for a second or two, then keep walking.
A Heart Full of Love, But Unwanted

Staff and volunteers don’t get why Captain is still a shelter resident because, to them, this handsome mixed breed is a full package. Captain has a heart of gold; one that’s overflowing with love and playfulness. From the moment you meet Captain, he makes one thing clear: that he’s ready to adore you and have fun with you.
It’s heartbreaking to think that nobody so far has taken the time to get to know him and discover how special he is. While the first thing you may notice about him is the sprinkles of gray on his face, it won’t take you long to realize that he has the energy and enthusiasm of a 2-year-old pup.
Captain doesn’t deserve to be turning gray in a shelter. He deserves to experience what life in a warm, loving home feels like because the only thing he’s familiar with is how cold the concrete floors of a kennel can be.
Could You Give Captain His Happy Ending?

Captain’s obsession with play is on a whole new level. For other dogs, a tennis ball is just a mere toy. But to Captain, this neon-green ball is the most prized possession you could ever own.
You can’t convince Captain that his signature game — two-ball-catch, where you toss him a second ball immediately after he brings back the first one — isn’t the greatest invention in existence. But behind all that playfulness is a dog who yearns to share his unstoppable joy with someone he can call his forever person.
Captain can get quite protective of his toys, so he’s best suited for a home with no small kids who may unintentionally cross his boundaries. We’re not sure about many things in this life, but we can guarantee you that Captain will fill your days with belly laughs, your arms with 63 pounds worth of cuddles, and your heart with more love than it could hold. If you’d love to offer him a forever home, kindly visit the Humane Society Naples’s website for details on his adoption process.
