Sweet Shelter Dog with Mesmerizing Two-Toned Eyes Marks a Full Year in Shelter
Despite the presence of many shy and guarded rescue dogs in shelters—dogs who require patience and time to reveal their true selves—there are also outgoing, fun-loving pups like Santo, a Greyhound mix eager to meet his future adopters. Santo, a friendly and affectionate 3-year-old, is both athletic and loving, but it’s his striking coloring and captivating eyes that first charm those who meet him. (Watch video below)
Although Santo prefers to be outside, racing around the play yard, he’s been waiting patiently at the Animal House Shelter in Huntley, Illinois, for just over a year. On July 24, he marked his first anniversary at the shelter, but more than anything, he hopes to celebrate by finally going home with a forever friend or family. Santo is such a good boy—he truly deserves it!

Aww, what a good boy! This gorgeous Greyhound/Collie mix couldn’t be any more handsome or polite, and it’s a wonder why he’s still waiting in the shelter for someone to adopt him. True, he’s more on the active side, but there are plenty of potential adopters who would love to have a hiking buddy or running partner exactly like him. In fact, an exercise regimen would be great for Santo, especially since he does best with a consistent routine and plenty of opportunities to channel his energy in a fun and healthy way. Training is a must with this young, happy guy, but that will help both him and his new owner build trust as they navigate training together.
Handsome With Heterochromia
Santo is such a beautiful boy! He sits so prettily even while waiting in his small kennel, but it takes only a few seconds to see how truly captivating he is. The way his brown and white coloring is split direction down the center of his face is so cool, but my favorite thing about his looks is his heterochromia. One of his eyes is a deep brown, while the eye with heterochromia is both brown and blue!
Only a few breeds regularly experience this gorgeous mutation, including Collies (the other half of Santo’s breed ancestry). As the canine experts at Hill’s Pet explain, heterochromia is more common among dogs with merle or white coloring, as the lack of melanin causes the lack of coloration in part of the eye. And the best part? This stunning difference is totally harmless! Unless heterochromia develops as the result of an illness or eye injury, it’s not likely to go hand-in-hand with any ocular concerns.
